Seasonal Collects

Advent

¶ The Collect of the Day of a festal mass during Advent is said under its own ending, and then the collect for the preceding Sunday is said as the first commemoration as a commemoration of the feria.

¶ The following collects for Saint Mary are used as the seasonal prayers in each mass during Advent, except when otherwise specified. In the case of a mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, including one in which the Blessed Virgin is commemorated, the seasonal collect is that of the Holy Spirit, as given below.

Of Saint Mary

Collect

O God, thou hast willed that at the message of an angel thy Word should take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary; grant to thy suppliant people, that we, who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, may be helped by her intercession with thee. Through.

Secret

We beseech thee, O Lord, to strengthen in our minds the mysteries of the true faith: that we who confess him, who was conceived of the Virgin, to be true God and man, may by the power of his saving resurrection, merit to attain eternal joy. Through the same.

Postcommunion

Pour forth, we beseech thee O Lord, thy grace into our hearts; that we to whom the incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel may, by his passion and cross, be brought to the glory of his resurrection. Through the same.

Of the Holy Spirit

Collect

O GOD, who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through.

Secret

Sanctify, we beseech thee, O Lord, the gifts we offer, and cleanse our hearts with the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. Through...in the unity of the same Holy Ghost.

Postcommunion

May the infusion of the Holy Spirit cleanse our hearts, O Lord, and make them fruitful by the inward watering with his heavenly dew. Through.
Passiontide

¶ During Passiontide, beginning with Vespers on Saturday before Passion Sunday, the crosses, icons, and statues are either removed from view or veiled in purple cloth. They remain thus until the mass of Easter Vigil. Also, the Gloria Patri is omitted in all instances in masses of the sesason, but is included in feasts. The Psalm Judica me is also omitted from the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar in masses of the Season. In the Introit, the antiphon is repeated up until the Psalm as usual, but is repeated immediately after the Psalm is recited (as there is no Gloria Patri). Musical instruments, including bells, are not heard after the Gloria in Excelsis at the Maundy Thursday mass until the Gloria of Easter Vigil.

¶ During Passiontide, the Seasonal Collects are as follows:

For the Quick and the Dead

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, who hast dominion both of the quick and of the dead, who likewise hast mercy upon all men, whom by reason of their faith and works thou hast foreknown: we commend unto thee all those for whom we now do offer our prayers, whether in this world they still be held in the bonds of the flesh, or being delivered therefrom have passed into that which is to come; beseeching thee that at the intersession of all thy Saints they may of thy bountiful goodness obtain the remission of all their sins. Postcommunion

Almighty and most merciful God, cleanse us, we pray thee, by the Sacrament which we have received: and at the intercession of all thy Saints grant that this holy Communion may bring upon us not guilt to our damnation but pardon to our salvation; that it may cleanse the guilty and confirm the feeble, that it may strengthen us against every danger in this world, and obtain for thy faithful people both quick and dead the remission of all their sins.
