The Asperges

In principal Sunday High Masses
¶ The ministers having processed or entered the sanctuary, the celebrant, vested in cope, intones the Asperges, which is continued by the choir. The celebrant and ministers continue reciting the remainder of what is below. Then the celebrant accepts the aspergillum and asperses the altar thrice. Aspersing himself, he then rises and asperses the Deacon and Sub-Deacon (if at high mass), who then rise. (And note that at a sung mass, if there is a Deacon of the Mass, then he is similarly aspersed first.) The celebrant proceeds with the Deacon on his right and the Sub-Deacon on his left to asperse any clergy in choir, and then the servers. They then proceed through the church to asperse the people. When the choir reaches the Gloria Patri, they stop and bow for the first verse, and then continue. Returning to the sanctuary, the celebrant removes the cope and takes the chasuble. Bishops either perform the asperges in chasuble or omit it altogether.

VIDI AQUAM
In principal Sunday masses from Easter to Whitsunday 

¶ From Easter Sunday through Saturday of Whitsunweek inclusive, the Asperges is replaced with the Vidi Aquam. The procedures remain the same as for the asperges ritual.

Vidi aquam egredientem de templo a latare dextro, alleluia: et omnes ad quos pervenit aqua ista salvi facti sunt et dicent: alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus: quoniam in saeculum misericordia eius. V. Gloria Patri. Vidi aquam...etc.

¶ Then follows Ostende nobis as above with Alleluia.

The Celebrant prepares for the great Sacrifice by prayers,
sacred songs and readings from Holy Scripture.

PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR
Prayers of humility, love, desire, contrition, and confidence.

The Sign of the Cross

¶ After the Asperges, if it is done, or else after the procession or entry into the sanctuary, the priest goes to the pavement before the altar. The Celebrant, and the Deacon and Sub-Deacon if at high mass, stand (and similarly at a sung mass, if there is a Deacon), all others kneel. The people kneel beginning at this point or, if the Asperges is done, at the time the Asperges begins and remain kneeling through the prayers at the foot of the altar. The Celebrant, bowing down at the foot of the altar, makes the Sign of the Cross, from his forehead to his breast, and says:
In nomine Patris, et Filii, + et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

¶ Then joining his hands before his breast, he begins the Anthem:

Sacerdos. Introibo ad altare Dei.

Minister. Ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.

Psalm 42(43): Iudica me

¶ The Celebrant alternates with the ministers and servers in reciting this psalm to express his desire, joy and confidence in going to the altar of the Sacrifice. At a low mass, the Celebrant recites this psalm with the server or servers. In Masses for the Dead and from Passion Sunday until Holy Saturday exclusively, this psalm is omitted.

S. Iudica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo, et doloso erue me.

M. Quia tu es Deus fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

¶ The Celebrant, with all signing themselves, says:

S. + Adiutorum nostrum in nomine Domini.

Public Confession
An acknowledgement of his guilt before God and that of all others assisting at the divine Sacrifice.

¶ Then, joining his hands, and humbly bowing down, the Celebrant says the Confiteor:

S. Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Ioanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et vobis fratres: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, et opere: (Here he strikes his breast thrice.) …mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaelum Archangelum, beatum Ioannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et vos fratres, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.

M. Misereatur tui omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis tuis, perducat te ad vitam aeternam.

¶ The Celebrant answers: Amen.

¶ Then the ministers and servers bow low and say the Confiteor. The Deacon and Sub-Deacon at high mass, or the Deacon, if there is one, at a sung mass, bow low and remain standing as the Celebrant did.


M. ¶ Then the Celebrant, with his hands joined and all making the Sign of the Cross on themselves, says:

¶ All bowing down, the Celebrant proceeds:

S. Deus, tu conversus vivificabis nos.

M. Et plebs tua laetabitur in te.

S. Ostende nobis Domine, misericordiam tuam.

M. Et salutare tuum da nobis.

S. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.

M. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

¶ Extending his arms and remaining facing the altar, he says:

S. Dominus vobiscum. M. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

¶ Extending his arms again, the Celebrant says, facing the altar:

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee and worthily magnify thy Holy Name. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

The Priest Ascends the Altar

¶ With a prayer for pardon on his lips the Celebrant ascends the altar, which he kisses. After the Collect for Purity, first extending, then joining his hands, the Celebrant says audibly Oremus; then ascending to the altar, he says secretly:

AUFER a nobis, quaesumus, Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen. His hands joined, and bowing down over the altar, the Celebrant says: Oramus te, Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum, (The Celebrant alone kisses the altar.) quorum reliquiae hic sunt, et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen.

Incensation of the Altar
at Solemn Masses

¶ At high masses and optionally at sung masses, the altar is incensed according to the form given in the rubrics. If there is a Deacon of the Mass, the Deacon takes the thurible from the thurifer and present it to the Celebrant. At a sung mass without a Deacon, this is performed by the thurifer. At a high mass, the Deacon and Sub-Deacon stand on the right and left of the Celebrant respectively and move with him around the altar, holding his chasuble out of the way, and bowing with him. If, at a sung mass, there is a Deacon, then he stands to the right, and the MC or another server optionally stands to the left. Or, the Celebrant at a sung mass may cense the altar alone.

¶ Whilst blessing the incense the Celebrant says:


AB illo + benedicaris, in cuius honore cremaberis. Amen.


FROM THE INTROIT TO THE OFFERTORY
Prayer of Faith

Introit

¶ The introit is begun by the choir at a high mass or optionally at a sung mass immediately after any entrance hymn, if any, or after the Asperges is sung, if the asperges ritual is done. While it continues, the prayers at the foot of the altar are said. It should finish prior to the Summary of the Law. In all cases, the congregation remains kneeling, except when the introit is used as the entrance hymn. In that case, the people stand at high or sung mass, and then kneel when the prayers at the foot of the altar begin. At low mass, they kneel.

¶ The Celebrant, signing himself with the + Sign of the Cross, reads the Introit of the day. (At the Masses for the Dead, the Celebrant makes the Sign of the Cross on the Missal instead of on himself.) The introit being finish, the Celebrant goes to the center of the altar and turns to the people and says the following with arms extended. (And note that the Introit, if it is being sung, should conclude prior to the Celebrant turning to the people. If need be, he stands in the center of the altar, facing the altar, until the singing concludes, and then continues.)


The Summary of the Law

Hear what Our Lord Jesus Christ saith : Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment, and the second is like unto it : Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Kyrie Eleison
A series of invocations addressed to each of the Three Divine Persons.

¶ Then, turning back to face the altar and joining his hands, the Celebrant says alternately with the ministers:

V. Kyrie eleison.

R. Kyrie eleison.

V. Kyrie eleison.

R. Christe eleison.

V. Christe eleison.

R. Christe eleison.

V. Kyrie eleison.

R. Kyrie eleison.

V. Kyrie eleison.

¶ And note that in a high mass and optionally in a sung mass, the Kyrie is also sung by the choir. The choir begins this as soon as the Summary of the Law has concluded. When the Celebrant finishes reciting the Kyrie, he (and the Deacon and Sub-Deacon at high mass, or the Deacon, if in use, at sung mass) moves to the sedilia and sits until the choir finishes. At or shortly before the moment the choir finishes, they return to the altar.

Gloria in Excelsis

¶ Standing at the middle of the altar, extending and then joining his hands,and bowing slightly, the Celebrant says, except during Lent and Advent and in Masses for the Dead, the Gloria in excelsis. The people stand, but then sit when the Celebrant moves to the sedilia to sit. In a high mass, the Gloria is sung. The Celebrant begins this by intoning the first words, viz., Gloria in excelsis Deo. It is then continued by the choir. As at the Kyrie, the Celebrant recites the rest of the Gloria and then moves to the sedilia (with the Deacon and Sub-Deacon, if any) to sit as the choir finishes. While at the sedilia, he makes the proper reverence as the choir sings the certain parts of the Gloria requiring a reverence as described below. He then returns to the altar as usual. 

¶ When are said the words: Adoramus te, Gratias agimus; Jesu Christe; and Suscipe deprecationem nostram, all bow, and at the end all sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross as usual.


Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. (Bow at the following:) Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. (Bow at the following:) Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite (Bow at the following:) Iesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, (Bow at the following:) suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus (Bow at the following:) Iesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu + in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

¶ Then the Celebrant kisses the altar, and turning to the people says:

V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

¶ Bishops may substitute Pax Vobis for Dominus Vobiscum before the Collect on days on which the Gloria is said in this one location only.

¶ And note further that a Bishop celebrating a low mass does all as is described in the rubrics of this missal. A Bishop celebrating a high mass, however, celebrates from the throne or faldstool, and all prior to the offertory is said from there after the altar is censed. All references, therefore, to the altar, including kissing the altar, are ignored.


Collects

¶ Here follow the Collects. The Celebrant first says the Collect of the Day, as appointed in the missal, and then the appointed and discretionary commemorations, and then the Seasonal Collects, followed by any prayers ad libitum from the Table of Prayers or the Section of Various Prayers. The Collect of the Day is said under its own ending, and the other prayers that follow it are joined together under one ending, except where otherwise noted in the propers.

¶ The Collects are chanted instead of recited at high mass and sung mass. The people kneel for the collects.

¶ The usual ending, abbreviated Per Dominum., is Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum filium tuum. Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus. Per omnia saecula saeculorum. Variations to this are indicated in the Propers.



Epistle

¶ Here is read the Epistle or Lesson for the Day. At the end of the Epistle, the server and people answer: Deo gratias.

¶ At a high mass, the Epistle is chanted by the Sub-Deacon. At a sung mass, this may be read or chanted by a Lector, or by the Celebrant, who may chant the Epistle either from the missal at the altar or from the Epistolarium at a lectern or other suitable location. The people sit for the reading of the Epistle and remain sitting for the Gradual unless they participate in singing, in which case they stand.

Gradual

¶ The Gradual is read from the propers. Then the Deacon, or Celebrant at a low mass or if he is celebrating alone at a sung mass, says the Munda Cor Meum, bowing down in front of the altar with hands joined. During this time, a Gradual hymn may be sung, or the gradual verse may be sung by the choir. However, the latter is omitted at low mass.

MUNDA cor meum ac labia mea, omnipotens Deus, qui labia Isaiae prophetae calculo mundasti ignito: ita me tua grata miseratione dignare mundare ut sanctum Evangelium tuum, digne valeam nuntiare. Per Christum Dominum notsrum. Amen.

¶ At Low Masses or Sung Masses without a Deacon of the Mass, the Celebrant says the following prayer (except as Masses for the Dead and when the Passion is read):

IUBE Domine benedicere. Dominus sit in corde meo, et in labiis meis: ut digne et competenter annuntiem Evangelium suum. Amen.

¶ In Solemn Masses the Celebrant blesses the incense in the usual manner, and the Deacon, kneeling before the altar with his hands joined, says the Munda cor. Afterwards he takes the book from the altar, and again kneeling down before the celebrant, asks his blessing, saying:

IUBE domne benedicere.

¶ The celebrant answers:

DOMINUS sit in corde tuo, et in labiis tuis: ut digne et competenter annunties Evangelium suum: In nomine Patris, et Filii, + et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Gospel

¶ If at a low mass, the Celebrant reads the Gospel from the missal, facing it with hands joined for all of the following. At High Mass, the Deacon sings the Gospel from the Book of Gospels according to the rubrics. At a sung mass, the Deacon sings the Gospel as at high mass, or the Celebrant sings it from the missal at the altar or from the Book of Gospels at a convenient location. The people stand for the Gospel.

V. Dominus vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

V. Sequentia (or Initium) sancti Evangelii secundum N.

R. Gloria tibi, Domine.

¶ The Deacon (or Celebrant in a Low Mass) signs the Book, + and himself on the forehead, mouth, and breast after Sequentia... or Initium.... All the people present sign themselves on the forehead, mouth, and breast as well.

¶ Then is read or sung the Gospel. Afterwards is said by the servers and all present:


R. Laus tibi, Christe.

¶ The Celebrant kisses the Gospel, and says (except in masses for the dead and when the Passion is read):

Per evangelica dicta deleantur nostra delicta.

¶ At High and Sung Masses the Celebrant is then incensed by the Deacon. In Masses for the Dead, the Munda cor is said as given above, but the blessing and the end thereof is not asked (Iube Domne benedicere), and the Celebrant does not kiss the Gospel.

Sermon

¶ At the principal mass on Sundays, and optionally at other masses shall be preached a sermon. This is preached by the Celebrant or another priest or deacon. The people sit for the sermon.

Creed

¶ Standing in the center of the altar, the Celebrant says the Creed. At a high mass, and optionally at a sung mass, the Celebrant intones the Creed, which is then continued by the choir. In this case, the Celebrant, having finished reciting the Creed, moves with the Deacon and Sub-Deacon (if there be either) to the sedilia and sits as the choir continues. As the choir sings Et incarnatus est etc., he gives up the biretta and kneels.

¶ At a high mass, and at a sung mass with a Deacon at which the Sacred Vessels are not already on the altar and the Creed is sung, the Deacon rises after the genuflexion in the Creed, goes to the credence table and takes the burse, and then goes to the altar to spread the corporal, returning to the sedilia thereafter until the choir finishes. The people stand for the Creed and sit when the Celebrant sits.



CREDO in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae, visibilium omnium, et invisibilium. Et in unum Dominum Iesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum. Et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero. Genitum, non factum, consubstantialem Patri: per quem omnia facta sunt. Qui propter nos homines, et propter nostram salutem descendit de coelis. (Here kneel down.) Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine: et homo factus est. (Here rise.) Crucifixus etiam pro nobis: sub Pontio Pilato passus et sepultus est. Et resurrexit tertia die, secundum Scripturas. Et ascendit in coelum: sedet ad dexteram Patris. Et iterum venturus est cum gloria iudicare vivos, et mortuos: cuius regni non erit finis. Et in Spiritum Sanctum Dominum et vivificantem: qui ex Patre Filioque procedit. Qui cum Patre et Filio simul adoratur, et conglorificatur: qui locutus est per prophetas. Et unam sanctam catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorem. + Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen.


MASS OF THE FAITHFUL

™˜OFFERTORY

¶ The people sit for the Offertory. Celebrant kisses the altar, and turning to the people says or, at high or sung mass, sings:

V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

¶ Then the Celebrant reads the Offertory verse. At a high mass, and optionally at a sung mass, the choir sings the offertory verse and/or an appropriate offertory hymn after Oremus above. Having finished reading the offertory verse, the Celebrant continues with the offertory as below.

Offering of the Bread and Wine

¶ He takes the paten with the host and offering it up, says:

Suscipe, sancte Pater, omnipotens aeterne Deus, hanc immaculatam hostiam, quam ego indignus famulus tuus offero tibi Deo meo vivo et vero, pro innumerabilibus peccatis, et offensionibus, et negligentiis meis, et pro omnibus circumstantibus, sed et pro omnibus fidelibus christianis vivis atque defunctis: ut mihi, et illis proficiat ad salutem in vitam aeternam. Amen.

The server rings the bell once as the priest offers the host.

¶ Making the Sign of the Cross + with the paten, the Celebrant places the host upon the corporal.

¶ He pours wine and water into the chalice, blessing the water before it is mixed as given below. However, at a high mass, the Deacon pours the wine, and the Sub-Deacon pours the water. At a sung mass with a Deacon, the Deacon may pour both the wine and the water.


DEUS, + qui humanae substantiae dignitatem mirabiliter condidisti, et mirabilius reformasti: da nobis per huius aquae et vini mysterium, eius divinitatis esse consortes, qui humanitatis nostrae fieri dignatus est particeps, Iesus Christus Filius tuus Dominus noster: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

¶ In Masses for the Dead, the foregoing prayer is said, but the water is not blessed.

¶ Then the priest takes the chalice, and offers it, saying:


Offerimus tibi, Domine, calicem salutaris, tuam deprecantes clementiam: ut in conspectu divinae maiestatis tuae, pro nostra et totius mundi salute cum odore suavitatis ascendat. Amen.

¶ The Celebrant makes the Sign of the Cross + with the chalice, places it upon the corporal, and covers it with the pall. At a high mass or a sung mass with a Deacon, the Deacon instead covers the chalice with the pall.

¶ Then, with his hands joined upon the Altar, and slightly bowing down, the Celebrant says:


IN spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine: et sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

¶ Raising his eyes towards heaven, extending and then joining his hands, the Celebrant makes the Sign of the Cross over the host and the chalice, while he invokes the Holy Spirit.

VENI, Sanctificator, omnipotens, aeterne Deus: et bene+dic hoc sacrificium tuo sancto nomini
praeparatum.

Incensing of the Offerings

¶ At Solemn Masses, the Celebrant now blesses incense, saying the following prayers:

PER intercessionem beati Michaelis Archangeli, stantis a dextris altaris incensi, et omnium electorum suorum, incensum istud dignetur Dominus bene+dicere, et in odorem suavitatis accipere. Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

¶ Receiving the thurible from the deacon, the Celebrant incenses the bread and the wine, while he says:

Incensum istud a te benedictum ascendat ad te, Domine: et descendat super nos misericordia tua.

¶ Then he incenses the altar, saying:

Dirigatur, Domine, oratio mea, sicut incensum in conspectu tuo: elevatio manuum mearum sacrificium vespertinum.

PONE, Domine, custodiam ori meo, et ostium circumstantiae labiis meis.

UT non declinet cor meum in verba malitiae, ad excusandas, excusationes in peccata.

¶ Giving the censor to the deacon, he says:

Accendat in nobis Dominus ignem sui amoris, et flammam aeternae caritatis. Amen.

¶ The Celebrant is then incensed by the deacon, who also censes the Sub-Deacon. The thurifer then incenses the Deacon and others in order. Then the congregation is incensed.

Lavabo

Psalm 25. 6-12

¶ The Celebrant washes his fingers after or during reciting the following psalm. He bows towards the altar cross as usual at the Gloria Patri.

LAVABO inter innocentes manus meas: et circumdabo altare tuum, Domine. Ut audiam vocem laudis: et enarrem universa mirabilia tua. Domine, dilexi decorem domus tuae: et locum habitationis gloriae tuae. Ne perdas cum impiis, Deus, animam meam: et cum viris sanguinum citam meam. In quorum manibus iniquitates sunt: dextera eorum repleta est muneribus. Ego autem in innocentia mea ingressus sum: redime me, et miserere mei. Pes meus stetit in directo: in ecclesiis benedicam te, Domine. Gloria Patri . . .

¶ In Masses for the Dead and in Passiontide the Gloria Patri is omitted.

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

¶ Bowing down before the middle of the altar, the Celebrant, with joined hands, says:

Suscipe sancta Trinitas, hanc oblationem, quam tibi offerimus ob memoriam passionis, resurrectionis, et ascensionis Iesu Christi Domini nostri: et in honorem beatae Mariae semper Virginis et beati Ioannes Baptistae, et sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli, et istorum, et omnium Sanctorum: ut illis proficiat ad honorem, nobis autem ad salutem: et illi pro nobis intercedere dignentur in coelis, quorum memoriam agimus in terris. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Orate Fratres

¶ The Celebrant kisses the altar and, turning towards the people, extending, then joining his hands, says audibly:

¶ The server and people answer after Orate fratres:

Suscipiat Dominus sacrificium de manibus tuis ad laudem, et gloriam nominis sui, ad utilitatem quoque nostram, totiusque Ecclesiae suae sanctae.

¶ The priest answers in a low voice: Amen.

¶ And note that, if celebrating a private mass alone without servers, the Celebrant instead says, without turning around,
Oro ut meum sacrificium, acceptabile fiat apud Deum Patrem omnipotentem.

Secrets

¶ Then, with outstretched hands, he recites the Secret Prayers in a subdued voice, not beginning with Oremus. The Secrets are of the same subject and in the same order and number as the Collects said earlier. They are recited, not sung, and in the secret voice, i.e., barely audible to those nearby that something is being said, but not understandable. These prayers being finished, the Celebrant says or, at high or sung mass, sings:

Per omnia saecula saeculorum.

R. Amen.

Invitation to Communion

¶ The Priest then turns to the people, extends his hands, and says.

YE who do truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways, draw near with faith and take this Holy Sacrament to your comfort, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

¶ Turning back to the altar and bowing, the priest leads the confession.

General Confession

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men, We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy Divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. The remembrance of them is grievous unto us. The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father, for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake. Forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.

Absolution

¶ Then the Celebrant (or Bishop, if present, taking the crosier, but not the mitre) shall turn to the people and pronounce absolution.

ALMIGHTY God, our Heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him. Have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Comfortable Words

HEAR what comfortable words our Savior Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him. Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. So God loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Hear also what Saint Paul saith. This is a true saying and worthy of all men to be received: That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Hear also what Saint John saith: If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and he is the propitiation for our sins.

Preface

¶ The Celebrant reads or, at high mass or sung mass, sings the preface for the day, which is followed by the Sanctus and Benedictus. However, at a high mass at which the Sanctus and Benedictus are sung, the Celebrant still recites them as usual during the singing and proceeds to begin the Canon of the Mass up to the consecration exclusive as the music for the Sanctus continues. After the consecration and elevation of both elements, the choir sings the Benedictus. All music shall cease during the consecration.

Sanctus and Benedictus

¶ The Celebrant says the Sanctus while bowing, and he signs himself when he says Benedictus. Then, having finished this, he begins the Canon.

The server rings the bells thrice at the Sanctus.


THE PRAYERS BEFORE THE CONSECRATION

For the Church and the Ecclesiastical Authorities

¶ The Celebrant, extending, raising and then joining his hands, raising his eyes towards heaven and deeply bowing, says in a low voice:

Te igitur, clementissime Pater, per Iesum Christum Filium tuum Dominum nostrum, supplices rogamus ac petimus (Here kiss the altar) uti accepta habeas, et benedicas, (Here join the hands and sign the oblation thrice with the Sign of the Cross.) haec + dona, haec + munera, haec + sancta sacrificia illibata. ¶ The feasts and octaves of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, the Ascension, and Whitsunday have their own proper Communicantes, which may be found in their respective propers.

¶ After pronouncing the words of the Consecration, the Celebrant, kneeling, adores the Sacred Host ; rising, he elevates it, and then placing it on the corporal, again adores it. After this he never disjoins his fingers and thumbs, except when he is to take the Host, until after the washing of his fingers. Then, uncovering the chalice, the Celebrant says:

Simili modo, postquam coenatum est, (Here take the chalice with both hands) accipiens et hunc praeclarum Calicem in sanctas ac venerabilis manus suas: item tibi gratias agens, (Here take the chalice in the left hand, and with the right, signs it with the Sign of the Cross) bene+dixit, deditque discipulis suis, dicens: Accipite, et bibite ex eo omnes,

¶ The Celebrant kneels and adores the Precious Blood ; rising, he elevates the Chalice , and setting it down he covers it and adores it again .

¶ With hands held apart, the Celebrant then proceeds:

¶ Bowing down, with his hands joined and placed upon the altar, the Celebrant says:
SUPPLICES te rogamus, omnipotens Deus, iube haec perferri per manus sancti Angeli tui in sublime altare tuum, in conspectu divinae maiestatis tuae: ut quotquot, (Here kiss the altar.) ex hac altaris, participatione sacrosanctum Filii tui (Here joins the hands, and sign the Host and the Chalice with the Sign of the Cross.) THE PRAYERS AFTER THE CONSECRATION

Commemoration of the Dead

MEMENTO etiam, Domine, famulorum famularumque tuarem N. et N., qui nos praecesserunt cum signo fidei, et dormiunt in somno pacis, (Here the Celebrant joins the hands and prays for such of the dead as he intends to pray for; then extending his hands he proceeds:) Ipsis, Domine, et omnibus in Christo quiescentibus, locum refrigerii lucis et pacis, ut indulgeas, deprecamur: (Here join the hands, and bow the head:) Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Invocation of the Saints

¶ Striking his breast and raising his voice for the first three words, the Celebrant says:

and Minor Elevation
¶ The Celebrant joins his hands.

Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Per quem haec omnia, Domine, semper bona creas, (Here sign thrice the Host and the Chalice together, saying:) sancti+ficas, vivi+ficas, bene+dicis, et praestas nobis. (Here uncover the Chalice, and genuflect: then taking the Host in the right hand, and holding the Chalice in the left, sign with the Sign of the Cross three times across the Chalice, saying:) Per ip+sum, et cum ip+so, et in ip+so,

Here the Celebrant signs twice between the Chalice and his breast: …est tibi Deo Patri + omnipotenti, in unitate Spiritus + Sancti, Here elevate a little the Chalice with the Host: …omnis honor et gloria.

¶ Replacing the Host, and covering the Chalice, the Celebrant kneels down, and rising again, he says (or sings): Per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.


THE PATER NOSTER

¶ The Celebrant sings, in high or sung masses, or says in low masses, the Lord’s Prayer, with the introduction first. At at low mass, the Pater Noster is recited as follows:

Oremus. Praeceptis salutaribus moniti, et divina institutione formati, audemus dicere:

PATER noster, qui es in coelis: sanctificetur nomen tuum: adveniat regnum tuum: fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo, et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie: et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem.

¶ The server and people, or the choir & the people, say the last petition.

THE LIBERA NOS

AND THE DIVISION OF THE HOST
¶ Then the Celebrant takes the paten between the first and second finger and says:

Libera nos, quaesumus, Domine, ab omnibus malis, praeteritis praesentibus, et futuris: et intercendente beata, et gloriosa semper Virgine Dei Genitrice Maria cum beatis Apostolis tuis Petro et Paulo, atque Andrea, et omnibus Sanctis, (The celebrant signs himself with the paten, and then kisses it) da propitius pacem in diebus nostris: ut ope misericordiae tuae adiuti, et a peccato simus semper liberi, et ab onmi perturbatione securi.

¶ Here the Celebrant places the paten under the Host, uncovers the Chalice, and makes a genuflection; rising, he takes the Host and breaks it in the middle over the Chalice, saying:

Per eumdem Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum Filium tuum.

¶ Here put the Part which is in the right hand upon the paten and break a Particle from the other Part in the left hand, saying:

Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus.

¶ The Celebrant places the Half which is in his left hand on the paten, and holding the Particle which he broke off in his right hand, and the Chalice in his left, he says, at dialogue masses:

Per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.


THE MIXTURE OF THE BODY AND BLOOD

¶ The Celebrant makes the Sign of the Cross with the Particle over the Chalice, saying, at dialogue masses:
Pax + Domini sit + semper vobis+cum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

¶ The Celebrant puts the Particle into the Chalice, saying:
Haec commixtio, et consecratio Corporis et Sanguinis Domini nostri Iesu Christi, fiat accipientibus nobis in vitam aeternam. Amen.

THE AGNUS DEI

¶ The Celebrant covers the Chalice, genuflects and rises; than bowing down and striking his breast thrice, he says:

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem.

¶ In Masses for the Dead, he says twice, instead of Miserere nobis:
Dona eis requiem.

¶ And lastly: Dona eis requiem sempiternam.

THE PRAYERS FOR HOLY COMMUNION

¶ With his hands joined and resting on the altar, standing inclined, the Celebrant says the three following prayers: In Masses for the Dead, the first of the following prayers is omitted.

I. Prayer for Peace

DOMINE Iesu Christe, qui dixisti Apostolis tuis: Pacem relinquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis: ne respicias peccata mea, sed fidem Ecclesiae tuae: eamque secundum voluntatem tuam pacificare et coadunare digneris: Qui vivis et regnas Deus per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

¶ In Solemn Masses the kiss of peace is now given; the Celebrant kisses the altar, then saluting the deacon, says:

V. Pax tecum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

¶ In Masses of the Dead, the kiss of peace is not given.

II. Prayer for Sanctification

DOMINE Iesu Christe, Fili Dei vivi, qui ex voluntate Patris, cooperante Spiritu Sancto, per mortem tuam mundum vivificasti: libera me per hoc sacrosanctum Corpus et Sanguinem tuum ab omnibus iniquitatibus meis, et universis malis: et fac me tuis semper inhaerere mandatis, et a te numquam separari permittas: Qui cum eodem Deo Patre, et Spiritu Sancto vivis et regnas Deus in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

III. Prayer for Grace

Perceptio, Corporis tui, Domine Iesu Christe, quod ego indignus sumere praesumo, non mihi proveniat in iudicium et condemnationem: sed pro tua pietate, prosit mihi ad tutamentum mentis et corporis, et ad medelam percipiendam. Qui vivis et regnas cum Deo Patre in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

THE PRAYERS AT THE COMMUNION

Communion of the Priest

Communion of the Body

¶ The Celebrant genuflects, rises and says:

Panem coelestem accipiam, et nomen Domini invocabo.

¶ Slightly inclining, the Celebrant takes both halves of the Host between the thumb and forefinger of his left hand, and the paten between the same forefinger and the middle one; then striking his breast with his right hand, and raising his voice a little, he says three times devoutly and humbly: (The bells are rung thrice as the Celebrant says the Domine non sum dignus)

Domine, non sum dignus, ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea.

¶ Then with his right hand, making the Sign of the Cross with the Host over the paten, the Celebrant says:

Corpus Domini nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam meam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

¶ He the Celebrant reverently receives both halves of the Host, joins his hands, and meditates a short time.

Communion of the Blood

¶ Then the Celebrant uncovers the Chalice, genuflects, collects whatever fragments may remain on the corporal, and purifies the paten over the Chalice, saying:

Quid retribuam Domino pro omnibus quae retribuit mihi? Calicem salutaris accipiam, et nomen Domini invocabo. Laudans invocabo Dominum, et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.

¶ The Celebrant takes the Chalice and making the Sign of the Cross with it, says:

Sanguis Domini nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam meam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

¶ Then he receives all the Precious Blood, together with the Particle.

Communion of the Faithful

¶ Elevating a particle of the Blessed Sacrament and turning towards the people, the Celebrant says:

Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi.

¶ And then he says with the servers and people three times:

Domine, non sum dignus, ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea.

¶ The Celebrant administers the Sacrament to the Sacred Ministers, then the other clergy, then the servers, each in order of rank, and then to the faithful, saying to each:

Corpus Domini nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen.


THE PRAYERS DURING THE ABLUTION

¶ The Celebrant says silently:

Quod ore sumpsimus, Domine, pura mente capiamus: et de munere temporali fiat nobis remedium sempiternum.

¶ Then the Celebrant holds out the Chalice to the server (in Solemn Masses instead to the deacon) who pours wine into it for the first ablution; then the Celebrant proceeds:
Corpus tuum, Domine, quod sumpsi, et Sanguis, quem potavi, adhaereat visceribus meis: et praesta; ut in me non remaneat scelerum macula, quem pura et sancta refecerunt sacramenta: Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

¶ The Celebrant then washes his fingers and receives the second ablution. Then he covers the chalice and folding the corporal, places it on the chalice, as at the beginning of Mass, and goes to the right side of the altar to say the prayers from the Missal.


CONCLUSION OF THE MASS

¶ The Celebrant continues the mass after the ablutions with the following, without turning to the people for a salutation as usual:

V. Oremus.

The Thanksgiving

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed us who have duly received these holy Mysteries with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical Body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and Passion. And we humbly beseech thee, O Heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. R. Amen.


THE COMMUNION VERSE
¶ After reading the Communion Verse for the day, the Celebrant kisses the altar. Then he turns to the people in the middle of the altar, and says at dialogue masses or sings at sung masses:

V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

POSTCOMMUNION

¶ Here the Celebrant reads or sings the postcommunion(s) for the day.

THE DISMISSAL

¶ The Celebrant (or optionally the Deacon at high mass or sung mass) turns to the people in the center of the altar, first kissing the altar, and says the following. And at high or sung mass, if the Deacon is to sing the dismissal, he stands in his usual place for the dismissal. The Celebrant kisses the altar and turns to the people as usual, the Deacon turning to the people as well. Then the Deacon gives the Dismissal.

V. Dominus vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

V. Ite, Missa est.

R. Deo gratias.

¶ If the Gloria in excelsis has not been said, there is said instead of the Depart in peace.

V. Benedicamus Domino.

¶ In Masses for the Dead is said:

¶ In Easter Week is said the following:

THE BLESSING

¶ Bowing down before the altar, with hands joined upon it, the Celebrant says in a low voice:

PLACEAT tibi, sancta Trinitas, obsequium servitutis meae: et praesta: ut sacrificium, quod oculis tuae maiestatis indignus obtuli, tibi sit acceptabile, mihique et omnibus, pro quibus illud obtuli, sit, te miserante, propitiabile. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

¶ He kisses the altar, and then, turning to the people, raising his eyes, extending, raising and joining his hands, he bows down his head and says:

V. Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater, et Filius, + et Spiritus Sanctus. R. Amen.

¶ In Masses for the Dead, the Blessing is omitted.

THE LAST GOSPEL

¶ Then turning to the Gospel side of the altar, if the Last Gospel is to be read from the missal, or else moving to the Gospel side of the altar, the Celebrant says:

V. Dominus vobiscum.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

¶ He then traces the Sign of the Cross, first upon the altar, and then upon his forehead, lips, and breast (the faithful should sign themselves as well), and says:

V. + Initium sancti Evangelii secundum Ioannem.
R. Gloria tibi, Domine.
