25 May 2016 - Saint Gregory VII, Pope & Confessor (Commemoration of St. Urban I, P.M.)

Double - White

INTROIT John. 21. 15-17

Simon Peter, if thou lovest me, feed my lambs, feed my sheep. Ps. 29.1. I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast upheld me: and hast not made mine enemies to rejoice over me. V.: Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, the strength of all who trust in thee, it was from thee that blessed confessor bishop Gregory drew courage and perseverance in defending the freedom of thy Church. May his example and intercession help us to face all adversity bravely. Through.

Commemoration: Saint Urban I

O Eternal Shepherd, who didst appoint blessed Urban shepherd of the whole Church, let the prayers of this martyr and Pope move thee to look with favor upon thy flock and keep it under thy continual protection. Through.

EPISTLE I Peter 5.1-4, 10-11.

Dearly Beloved: The ancients that are among you, I beseech who am myself also an ancient and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre's sake but voluntarily: Neither as lording it over the clergy but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart. And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you and confirm you and establish you. To him be glory and empire, for ever and ever. Amen.

Gradual Ps. 106.32, 31

Let them exalt him in the church of the people: and praise him in the chair of the ancients. V.: Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Matt. 16.18. Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (16.13-19)

At that time, Jesus came into the quarters of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is? But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answering said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

OFFERTORY Jer. 1.9-10.

Behold I have given my words in thy mouth: lo, I have set thee over the nations, and over kingdoms, to root up, and to pull down, and to build, and to plant.

SECRET
We have offered our gifts unto thee, O Lord. Let thy light graciously shine upon thy Church, so that this flock may everywhere prosper, and its pastors, under thy guidance, may be truly pleasing to thee. Through.

Commemoration: Saint Urban I

O Lord, graciously accept the gifts that we joyfully offer to thee. May thy Church, through the prayers of blessed Urban, always live in peace and rejoice in the security of her faith. Through.

COMMUNION Matt. 16.18.

Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.

POSTCOMMUNION

O Lord, govern the Church, which thou hast been pleased to nourish with thy Heavenly Food. Guide her by thy powerful direction, so that she may enjoy greater freedom and remain unshaken in the fullness of faith. Through.

Commemoration: Saint Urban I

O Lord, increase the spirit of grace which thou hast bestowed upon thy Church. Let the prayers of thy martyr and Pope Urban aid her so that she may never fail in obedience to her shepherd, and the shepherd may never be wanting in his care of the flock. Through.

GRADUAL Ps. 40.5,2

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (6.36-42)

AT that time Jesus said to his disciples: Be ye merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shalt not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven. Give, and it shall be given unto you: good measure, and pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. And he spoke also to them a similtude: can the blind lead the blind? do they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one shall be perfect if he be as his master. And why seest thou the mote in thy brothers eye: but the beam that is in thine own eye thou considerest not? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye: and then thou shalt see clearly to pull out the mote from thy brothers eye.

FIRST LESSON Joel 2.28-32

THUS saith the Lord God: I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Moreover, upon my servants and handmaids in those days I will pour forth my spirit. And I will shew wonders in heaven; and in earth, blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood: before the great and dreadful day of the Lord doth come. And it shall come to pass, that every one that shall call upon the Name of the Lord, shall be saved.

Alleluia. V. John 6.64 It is the Spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing.

COLLECT

MAY the Holy Spirit, O Lord, influence us with that same fire which Our Lord Jesus Christ sent upon the earth to burn brightly; who liveth and reigheth.

SECOND LESSON Lev.23.9-11, 15-17

IN those days, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: When you shall have entered into the land which I will give you, and shall reap your corn, you shall bring sheaves of ears, the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. Who shall lift up the sheaf before the Lord, the next day after the sabbath, that it may be acceptable for you, and shall sanctify it. You shall count therefore from the morrow after the sabbath, wherein you offered the sheaf of firstfruits, seven full weeks. Even unto the morrow after the seventh week be expired, that is to say, fifty days: and so you shall offer a new sacrifice to the Lord. Out of all your dwellings, two loaves of the firstfruits, of two tenths of flour leavened, which you shall bake for the firstfruits of the Lord. And you shall call this day most solemn, and most holy. You shall do no servile work therein. It shall be an everlasting ordinance in all your dwellings and generations, saith the Lord Almighty.

THIRD LESSON Deut. 26.1-11

IN those days: Moses said unto the children of Israel: Listen, Israel, to what I say unto you today: When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God will give thee to possess, and hast conquered it, and dwellest in it: Thou shalt take the first of all thy fruits, and put them in a basket, and shalt go to the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, that his name may be invocated there: And thou shalt go to the priest that shall be in those days, and say to him: I profess this day before the Lord thy God, that I am come into the land, for which he swore to our fathers, that he would give it us. And the priest taking the basket at thy hand, shall set it before the altar of the Lord thy God: And thou shalt speak thus in the sight of the Lord thy God: The Syrian pursued my father, who went down into Egypt, and sojourned there in a very small number, and grew into a nation great and strong and of an infinite multitude. And the Egyptians afflicted us, and persecuted us, laying on us most grievous burdens: And we cried to the Lord God of our fathers: who heard us, and looked down upon our affliction, and labour, and distress: And brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand, and a stretched out arm, with great terror, with signs and wonders: And brought us into this place, and gave us this land flowing with milk and honey. And therefore now I offer the firstfruits of the land which the Lord hath given me. And thou shalt leave them in the sight of the Lord thy God, adoring the Lord thy God. And thou shalt feast in all the good things which the Lord thy God hath given thee, and thy house, thou and the Levite, and the stranger that is with thee.

Alleluia. V. Acts 2.1 When the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all sitting together.

FOURTH LESSON Lev. 26.3-12

IN those days, the Lord said to Moses: Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them from me If you walk in my precepts, and keep my commandments, and do them, I will give you rain in due seasons. And the ground shall bring forth its increase: and the trees shall be filled with fruit. The threshing of your harvest shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land without fear. I will give peace in your coasts: you shall sleep, and there shall be none to make you afraid. I will take away evil beasts: and the sword shall not pass through your quarters. You shall pursue your enemies: and they shall fall before you. Five of yours shall pursue a hundred others: and a hundred of you ten thousand. Your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. I will look on you, and make you increase: you shall be multiplied, and I will establish my covenant with you. You shall eat the oldest of the old store: and, new coming on, you shall cast away the old. I will set my tabernacle in the midst of you: and my soul shall not cast you off. I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people, saith the Lord Almighty.

IN those days, the angel of the Lord went down with Azarias and his companions into the furnace: and he drove the flame of the fire out of the furnace, And made the midst of the furnace like the blowing of a wind bringing dew. And the flame mounted up above the furnace nine and forty cubits; and it broke forth, and burnt such of the Chaldeans as it found near the furnace, the servants of the king, who were heating it and the fire touched them not at all, nor troubled them, nor did them any harm. Then these three, as with one mouth, praised and glorified and blessed God, in the furnace, saying:

¶ The response Deo gratias (Thanks be to God) is not said.

AT that time, Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever: and they besought him for her. And standing over her, he commanded the fever: and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them. And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them to him. But he, laying his hands on every one of them, healed them. And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak; for they knew that he was Christ. And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place: and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him. And they stayed him that should not depart from them. AND it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them. And behold, men brought in a bed a man who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus. Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts? Which is easier to say: Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say: Arise and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man hath the power on earth to forgive sins (he saith to the sick of the palsy), I say to thee to: Arise, take up thy bed and go into thy house. And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay: and he went away to his own house, glorifying God. And all were astonished: and they glorified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: We have seen wonderful things to-day.

And the multi-tude of men and women who be-lieved in the Lord was more in-creased: Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that, when Peter came, his shadow at the least might overshadow any of them and they might be delivered from their in-firmities. AT that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees: Amen, amen, I say to you: He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth: and the sheep hear his voice. And he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out. And when he hath let out his own sheep, he goeth before them: and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. But a stranger they follow not, but fly from him, because they know not the voice of strangers. This proverb Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke. Jesus therefore said to them again: Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not. I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in and go out, and shall find pastures. The thief cometh not, but for to steal and to kill and to destroy. LESSON Acts 10.34, 42-48

IN those days, Peter opening his mouth, said: Men, the Lord commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that it is he who was appointed by God to be judge of the living and of the dead. To him all the prophets give testimony, that by his name all receive remission of sins, who believe in him. While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them that heard the word. And the faithful of the circumcision, who came with Peter, were astonished for that the grace of the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the Gentiles also. For they heard them speaking with tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered: Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Ghost, as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

AT that time, Jesus said to Nicodemus: For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting. For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world: but that the world may be saved by him. He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment: Because the light is come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil. For every one that doth evil hateth the light and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. But he that doth truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest: because they are done in God.

EPISTLE Acts 2. 1-11

WHEN the days of Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place; and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. And when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded in mind, because that every man heard them speak in his own tongue. And they were all amazed, and wondered, saying: Behold, are not all these that speak Galileans? And how have we heard every one our own tongue wherein we were born? Parthians and Medes, and Elamites, and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Lybia about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews also, and Proselytes, Cretes, and Arabians: we have heard them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.

And our inmost being fill.

Where thou art not, man hath nought
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew,
On our dryness pour thy dew,
Wash the stains of guilt away.

Bend the stubborn heart and will,
Melt the frozen, warm the chill,
Guide the steps that go astray.

On thy faithful who adore,
And confess thee evermore,
In thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them virtue's sure reward,
Give them thy salvation, Lord,
Give them joys that never end.
Amen. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (14. 23-31)

AT that time Jesus said to his disciples: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and will make our abode in him: he that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard is not mine: but the Father's who sent me. These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you. But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my Name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I have said to you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. You have heard that I said to you: I go away, and I come unto you. If you loved me, you would indeed be glad, because I go to the Father: for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass you may believe. I will not now speak many things with you. For the prince of this world cometh, and in me he hath not any thing. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father hath given me commandment so do I.

The Creed is said.

14 May 2016 - Saint Boniface, Martyr, and SATURDAY IN VIGIL OF THE PENTECOST

The mass of St. Boniface, Martyr may be said during the day prior to the Vigil.

Saint Boniface, Martyr

Double - Red

INTROIT Ps. 63.3.

THOU has protected me, O God, from the assembly of the malignant, alleluia: from the multitude of the workers of iniquity, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 63.2. Hear, O God, my prayer, when I make supplication to thee: deliver my soul from the fear of the enemy. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

O Almighty God, may the prayers of thy blessed martyr Boniface aid us as we celebrate his feast today. Through.

LESSON Wis. 5.1-5.

Then shall the just stand with great constancy against those that have afflicted them, and taken away their labours. These seeing it, shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the suddenness of their unexpected salvation, Saying within themselves, repenting, and groaning for anguish of spirit: These are they, whom we had sometime in derision, and for a parable of reproach. We fools esteemed their life madness, and their end without honour. Behold, how they are numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the saints.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 88.6. The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the Church of the Saints. Alleluia. Ps. 20.4. Thou hast set on his head, O Lord, a crown of precious stones. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (15.1-7)

At that time: Jesus did say unto his disciples: I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean, by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will: and it shall be done unto you.

OFFERTORY Ps. 88.6.

The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord, and thy truth in the Church of the Saints, alleluia, alleluia.

SECRET

EPISTLE Acts 19. 1-8.

IN those days, It came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephe-sus, and found certain disciples. And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost. And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism. Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus. Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and exhorting concerning the kingdom of God.
Alleluia. V.: Ps. 106. 1. Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

¶ The Alleluia is not repeated; instead the Tract is begun immediately.

TRACT Ps. 116. 1, 2.
O praise the Lord, all ye nations: and extol him, all ye peoples.
V.: For his mercy is confirmed upon us: and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever.
Candles are not carried at the Gospel, but incense only.
+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (14.15-21)

AT that time, Jesus said to his disciples: If you love me, keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever. The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him: but you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you or-phans, I will come to you. Yet a little while: and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: be-cause I live, and you shall live. In that day you shall know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

The Creed is not said.

LESSON Wis. 7.7-14

Wherefore I wished, and understanding was given me: and I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came upon me: And I preferred her before kingdoms and thrones, and esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her. Neither did I compare unto her any precious stone: for all gold, in comparison of her, is as a little sand; and silver, in respect to her, shall be counted as clay. I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light: for her light cannot be put out. Now all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable riches through her hands, And I rejoiced in all these: for this wisdom went before me, and I knew not that she was the mother of them all. Which I have learned without guile, and communicate without envy, and her riches I hide not. For she is an infinite treasure to men: which they that use, become the friends of God, being commended for the gifts of discipline.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Dan. 12.3 They who are learned shall shine as the brightness of the heavens. Alleluia. V. They who instruct many peoples in justice shall be as stars for all eternity. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (5.13-19)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing anymore but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. Ye are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY Ps.72.28

It is good for me to hold fast to God, to put my hope in the Lord, that I may proclaim all thy praises at the gates of the daughter of Sion. Alleluia.
