1 March 2014 - Saint David the Bishop and Confessor

INTROIT Ecclus. 45.30.

COLLECT

Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that the devout prayers of blessed David, thy Confessor and Bishop, may in such wise succor and defend us, that we who on this day observe his festival, may follow his constancy in the defence of thy true religion. Through.

LESSON Ecclus. 44.16-27; 45.3-20.

Henoch pleased God, and was translated into paradise, that he may give repentance to the nations. Noe was found perfect, just, and in the time of wrath he was made a recon-ciliation. Therefore was there a remnant left to the earth, when the flood came. The covenants of the world were made with him, that all flesh should no more be destroyed with the flood. Abra-ham was the great father of a multitude of nations, and there was not found the like to him in glory, who kept the law of the most High, and was in covenant with him. In his flesh he established the covenant, and in temptation he was found faithful. Therefore by an oath he gave him glory in his posterity, that he should increase as the dust of the earth, And that he would exalt his seed as the stars, and they should inherit from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. And he did in like manner with Isaac for the sake of Abraham his father. The Lord gave him the blessing of all nations, and confirmed his cove-nant upon the head of Jacob. He acknowledged him in his blessings, and gave him an inheritance, and divided him his portion in twelve tribes. And he preserved for him men of mercy, that found grace in the eyes of all flesh. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him commandments in the sight of his people, and shewed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faith, and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh. For he heard him, and his voice, and brought him into a cloud. And he gave him commandments before his face, and a law of life and instruction, that he might teach Jacob his covenant, and Israel his judg-ments. He exalted Aaron his brother, and like to himself of the tribe of Levi: He made an everlasting covenant with him, and gave him the priesthood of the nation, and made him blessed in glory, And he girded him about with a glorious girdle, and clothed him with a robe of glory, and crowned him with majestic attire. He put upon him a garment to the feet, and breeches, and an ephod, and he compassed him with many little bells of gold all round about, That as he went there might be a sound, and a noise made that might be heard in the temple, for a memorial to the children of his people. He gave him a holy robe of gold, and blue, and purple, a woven work of a wise man, endued with judgment and truth: Of twisted scarlet the work of an artist, with precious stones cut and set in gold, and graven by the work of a lapidary for a memorial, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. And a crown of gold upon his mitre wherein was engraved Holiness, an ornament of honour: a work of power, and delightful to the eyes for its beauty. Before him there were none so beautiful, even from the beginning. No stranger was ever clothed with them, but only his children alone, and his grandchildren for ever. His sacrifices were consumed with fire every day. Moses filled his hands and anointed him with holy oil. This was made to him for an everlasting testament, and to his seed as the days of heaven, to execute the office of the priesthood, and to have praise, and to glorify his people in his name. He chose him out of all men living, to offer sacrifice to God, incense, and a good savour, for a memorial to make reconciliation for his people.

Gradual Ecclus. 44.16, 20

Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God. V. There was not found the like to him, who kept the law of the Most High.

Tract Ps. 111.1-3.

Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he shall delight exceedingly in his commandments. V. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the righteous shall be blessed. V. Glory and wealth shall be in his house : and his justice remaineth for ever and ever.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 25.14-23

At that time: Jesus said this parable unto his disciples: For even as a man going into a far country called his servants and delivered to them his goods; And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey. And he that had received the five talents went his way and traded with the same and gained other five. And in like manner he that had received the two gained other two. But he that had received the one, going his way, digged into the earth and hid his lord's money. But after a long time the lord of those servants came and reckoned with them. And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents. Behold I have gained other five over and above. His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me. Behold I have gained other two. His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

27 February 2014 - Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

INTROIT Eccli. 11.13

The eye of God hath looked upon him for good, and he hath lifted him up from his low estate and hath exalted his head; and many have been in admiration of him and have glorified God. Ps. 72.1. How good is God to Israel, to those whose heart is upright. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, thou didst teach blessed Gabriel to meditate constantly on the sorrows of thy most sweet Mother, and thou didst exalt him by glorious virtues and miracles. Through his prayers and example, may we share the sorrows of thy Mother and come to eternal life under her motherly care; who livest and reignest.

EPISTLE I John 2.14-17

Beloved, I write unto you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and you have overcome the wicked one. Love not the world, nor the things which are in the world. If any man love the world, the charity of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world is the concupiscence of the flesh and the concupiscence of the eyes and the pride of life, which is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passeth away and the concupiscence thereof: but he that doth the will of God abideth for ever.

GRADUAL Ps. 30.20

How great and manifold are the delights, O Lord, which thou hast stored up for those who fear thee. V. Which thou showest to them who hope in thee, in the sight of the children of men.

TRACT Ps. 83.6-7, 11, 13

Blessed is the man whose help is from thee; who hath determined in his heart to make the journey through the vale of tears to the place he seeketh. V. I had rather to be one of the lowest in the house of my God than to live in the dwelling place of sinners.
V. He will not withhold good things from those who walk in innocence. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusteth in thee.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Mark 10.13-21

At that time, they brought to him young children, that he might touch them. And the disciples rebuked them that brought them. Whom when Jesus saw, he was much displeased and saith to them: Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter into it. And embracing them and laying his hands upon them, he blessed them. And when he was gone forth into the way, a certain man, running up and kneeling before him, asked him: Good Master, what shall I do that I may receive life everlasting? And Jesus said to him: Why callest thou me good? None is good but one, that is God. Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, bear not false witness, do no fraud, honour thy father and mother. But he answering, said to him: Master, all these things I have observed from my youth. And Jesus, looking on him, loved him and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee. Go, sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor: and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.

OFFERTORY Ps. 115.16-17

O Lord, I am thy servant, and the son of thy handmaiden. Thou hast loosed my bonds. I will offer unto thee a sacrifice of praise.

SECRET

We offer thee, O Lord, this life-giving sacrifice in memory of blessed Gabriel. Make us always remember the sacrifice of thy death, and let us share in the abundant effects of that sacrifice through the merits of the sorrowing Virgin; who livest and reignest.

COMMUNION Apoc. 3.20

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man listeneth to my voice and openeth the door unto me, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me.

POSTCOMMUNION

24 February 2014 - Saint Mathias the Apostle

INTROIT Ps. 138.17

Thy friends, O God, are made exceeding honorable; their principality is exceedingly strengthened. Ps. 139.1. Lord, thou hast proved me and known me: Thou hast known my sitting down and my rising up. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

O God who didst join blessed Matthias to the company of thine Apostles, grant, we beseech thee, that through his intercession, we may ever be conscious of thy compassion and loving kindness towards us. Through.

EPISTLE Acts 1.15-26

In those days, Peter rising up in the midst of the brethren, said: (now the number of persons together was about an hundred and twenty:) Men, brethren, the scripture must needs be fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was the leader of them that apprehended Jesus: who was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. And he indeed hath possessed a field of the reward of iniquity, and being hanged, burst asunder in the midst: and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: so that the same field was called in their tongue, Haceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let their habitation become desolate, and let there be none to dwell therein. And his bishopric let another take. Wherefore of these men who have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, until the day wherein he was taken up from us, one of these must be made a witness with us of his resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And praying, they said: Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas hath by transgression fallen, that he might go to his own place. And they gave them lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

GRADUAL Ps. 138.17-18

Thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honorable: their principality is exceedingly strengthened. I will number them, and they shall be multiplied above the sand: I rose up and am still with thee.

TRACT Ps. 20.3-4

Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not withholden from him the will of his lips. For thou hast prevented him with blessings of sweetness: thou hast set on his head a crown of precious stones.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 11.25-30

At that time, Jesus answered, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones. Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him. Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light. The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY Ps. 44.17-18

Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth: they shall remember thy name throughout all generations.

Sexagesima Sunday - 23 February 2014

INTROIT
Arise, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, and cast us not off to the end. Why turnest thou thy face away, and forgettest our trouble? our belly hath cleaved to the earth: arise, O Lord, help us and deliver us. Ps. 43.2. We have heard, O God, with our ears: our fathers have declared to us. V.: Glory be.

¶ The Gloria in Excelsis is not said at this mass, and also when it is resumed during the week as a ferial mass.

COLLECT

O God, who seest that we put not our trust in any thing that we do: mercifully grant that by thy power we may be defended against all adversities. Through.

EPISTLE II Cor.11.19-33; 12.1-9

Brethren, You gladly suffer the foolish: whereas yourselves are wise. For you suffer if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take from you, if a man be lifted up, if a man strike you on the face. I speak according to dishonor, as if we had been weak in the past. Wherein if any man dare (I speak foolishly), I dare also. They are Hebrews, so am I. They are Israelites, so am I. They are the seed of Abraham, so am I. They are the ministers of Christ (I speak as one less wise), I am more: in many more labors, in prisons more frequently, in stripes above measure, in deaths often. Of the Jews five times did I receive forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once I was stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I was in the depth of the sea: in journeying often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils from my own nation, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils from false brethren: in labor and painfulness, in much watching, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness; besides those things which are without, my daily instance, the solicitude for all the Churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is scandalized, and I am not on fire? If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things that concern my infirmity. The God and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed for ever, knoweth that I lie not. At Damascus the governor of the nation under Aretas the king, guarded the city of the Damascenes, to apprehend me: and through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and so escaped his hands. If I must glory (it is not expedient indeed) but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, whether in the body I know not, or out of the body, I know not, God knoweth, such a one caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man, whether in the body or out of the body, I know not, God knoweth: that he was caught up unto paradise, and heard secret words which it is not granted to man to utter. For such a one I will glory: but for myself I will glory nothing but in my infirmities. For though I should have a mind to glory, I shall not be foolish: for I will say the truth: but I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth in me, or anything he heareth from me. And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me, there was given me a sting of my flesh, and angel of Satan, to buffet me. For which thing, thrice I besought the Lord that it might depart from me. And He said to me: my grace is sufficient for thee: for power is made perfect in infirmity. Gladly therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

GRADUAL Ps. 82. 19, 14

Let the Gentiles know that God is thy Name: thou alone art the Most High over all the earth.
V.: O my God, make them like a wheel, and as stubble before the wind.

¶ The Tract is omitted when this mass is resumed as a ferial mass during the week.

TRACT Ps. 59.4, 6.

Thou hast moved the earth, O Lord, and hast troubled it.
V.: Heal thou the breaches thereof, for it has been moved. V.: That they may flee from before the bow: that thine elect may be delivered.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke 8. 4-15

At that time, when a very great multitude was gathered together and hastened out of the cities unto Jesus, he spoke by a similitude: The sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the wayside, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it choked it. And other some fell upon good ground: and being sprung up yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: he that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables: that seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand. Now the parable is this. The seed is the word of God. And they by the wayside are they that hear: then the devil cometh and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. Now they upon the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no roots: for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation they fall away. And that which fell away among thorns are they who have heard and, going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit. But on the good ground are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience. The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY Ps. 16. 5-7

Perfect thou my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps be not moved: incline thine ear, and hear my works: show forth thy wonderful mercies, thou who savest them that trust in thee, O Lord.
