Major Vigil of the First Class

Purple – until the Litany Red – for the Mass

Note: Masses today prior to the Vigil may be ferial masses as the ferial mass on Friday after the Octave of the Ascension. 

Blessing of the Font

¶ The altar is prepared, but the candles are not lit. The ministers, vested in violet, genuflect and go up to the altar, and the priest kisses the altar in the center. The Celebrant reads the prophecies from the epistle corner as on Holy Saturday. The Collects are said without Flectamus genua (Let us bend the knee.) Then the ministers proceed to the font and bless it just as on Holy Saturday, except that if there is no font to bless, the ministers shall lay aside their vestments and proceed immediately with the Litany.

Litany

¶ The litany is chanted as at Holy Saturday while the ministers prostrate before the altar. At the second part of the Litany, the minister rise and change into red vestments. The altar paraments are changed from purple to red.

Kyrie

¶ As at Holy Saturday, the Kyrie is again chanted as the conclusion to the Litany. During this time, the confession from the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar is said by the ministers and servers. After the Indulgentiam, the priest says Oremus (Let us pray) as usual and goes to the altar, kissing it in the center.

Gloria in Excelsis

¶ Immediately after the Kyrie finishes, the Gloria is intoned and the bells are set ringing. After, the Celebrant says Dominus vobiscum (The Lord be with you), and then the Collect.

¶ In masses without the Blessing of the Font, the vestments begin as red and the mass begins with the following Introit. If the Blessing of the Font is carried out, then this Introit is omitted.

INTROIT Ez. 36.23-26.

Then I shall be sanctified in you, I will gather you together out of all the countries: and I will pour upon you clean water and you shall be cleansed from your filthiness: and I will give you a new spirit, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 33. 2. I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall be always in my mouth. V.: Glory be.

COLLECT

Grant, we beseech thee, O almighty God, that the splendor of thy brightness may shine forth upon us, and the light of thy light may, by the illumination of the Holy Ghost, confirm the hearts of those who have been born again by thy grace. Through.

No other Collects are used at this mass.

EPISTLE Acts 19. 1-8.

In those days, It came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples. And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost. And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism. Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus. Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and exhorting concerning the kingdom of God.

¶ The Alleluia is not repeated; instead the Tract is begun immediately.

TRACT Ps. 116. 1, 2.

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: and extol him, all ye peoples.
V.: For his mercy is confirmed upon us: and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever.

¶ Candles are not carried at the Gospel, but incense only.

 The Creed is not said.

Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created, and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever, alleluia.

Hallow, we beseech thee, O Lord, the gifts we offer up to thee, and cleanse our hearts by the light of the Holy Ghost. Through.

In communion with, and in honor of this most holy day of Pentecost, whereon the Holy Ghost appeared to the Holy Apostles in countless tongues; and in worshipful remembrance of the glorious Mary, ever Virgin, Mother of the same our God and Lord Jesus Christ: and also of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon, and Thaddeus; Linus, Cletus, Clement, Xystus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian; and of all thy Saints; by whose merits and prayers grant thou that in all things we may be defended with the help of thy protection. COMMUNION John 7. 37-39.

On the last day of the festivity Jesus said: He that believeth in me, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water: now this he said of the Spirit which they should receive who believed in him, alleluia, alleluia.

POSTCOMMUNION

May the outpouring of the Holy Ghost cleanse our hearts, O Lord, and render them fruitful by the inward sprinkling of his heavenly dew. Through.
