4 May 2014 - Saint Monica, Widow and Easter II

Double - White

INTROIT Ps. 118.75, 120.

I KNOW, O Lord, that thy judgments are equity, and in thy truth thou hast humbled me: pierce thou my flesh with thy fear, I am afraid of thy judgments. Alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 118.1. Blessed are the undefiled in the way: who walk in the law of the Lord. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, thou art the comfort of those who mourn and the Savior of all who trust in thee. Blessed Monica's loving tears moved thee to convert her son Augustine. May we also grieve for our sins and win the grace of thy pardon through the intercession of these two saints. Through.

Commemorate Easter II

COLLECT

O God, who, by the humility of thy Son, didst lift up a fallen world, grant unending happiness to thy faithful: that those whom thou hast snatched from the perils of endless death, thou mayest cause to rejoice in everlasting days. Through.

EPISTLE I Tim. 5.3-10.

Dearly Beloved: Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or grandchildren, let her learn first to govern her own house and to make a return of duty to her parents: for this is acceptable before God. But she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, let her trust in God and continue in supplications and prayers night and day. For she that liveth in pleasures is dead while she is living. And this give in charge, that they may be blameless. But if any man have not care of his own and especially of those of his house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel. Let a widow be chosen of no less than threescore years of age, who hath been the wife of one husband. Having testimony for her good works, if she have brought up children, if she have received to harbour, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have ministered to them that suffer tribulation, if she have diligently followed every good work.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 44.5. With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, proceed prosperously and reign. Alleluia. V. Because of truth and meekness and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (7.11-16)

At that time, And it came to pass afterwards that Jesus went into a city that is called Naim: and there went with him his disciples and a great multitude. And when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother: and she was a widow. And a great multitude of the city was with her. Whom when the Lord had seen, being moved with mercy towards her, he said to her: Weep not. And he came near and touched the bier. And they that carried it stood still. And he said: Young man, I say to thee, arise. And he that was dead sat up and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. And there came a fear upon them all: and they glorified God saying: A great prophet is risen up among us: and, God hath visited his people.
