EPISTLE I Cor. 15.51-57

Brethren: Behold, I tell you a mystery. We shall all indeed rise again: but we shall not all be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall rise again incorruptible: and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption; and this mortal must put on immortality. And when this mortal hath put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? Now the sting of death is sin: and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who hath given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

GRADUAL IV Esdr. 2.34,35

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. V. Ps. 111.7. The just shall be in everlasting remembrance; he shall not fear the evil hearing.

TRACT

Absolve, O Lord, the souls of all the faithful departed from every bond of sin. And by the help of thy grace, may they be enabled to escape the avenging judgment and enjoy the bliss of everlasting light.

SEQUENCE

Day of Wrath and doom impeding,
David's word with Sibyl's blending.
Heaven and earth in ashes ending.

O what fear man's bosom rendeth
When from heaven the Judge descendeth,
On whose sentence all dependeth.

Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth,
Through earth's sepulchers it ringeth,
All before the throne it bringeth.

Death is struck, and nature quaking,
All creation is awaking,
To its Judge an answer making.

Lo, the book exactly worded,
Wherein all hath been recorded,
Thence shall judgment be awarded.

When the Judge his seat attaineth,
And each hidden deed arraigneth,
Nothing unavenged remaineth.

What shall I, frail man, be pleading?
Who for me be interceding,
When the just are mercy needing?

King of majesty tremendous,
Who dost free salvation send us,
Fount of pity, then befriend us.

Think, kind Jesus, my salvation
Caused thy wondrous Incarnation,
Leave me not to reprobation.

Faint and weary thou hast sought me,
On the Cross of suffering bought me,
Shall such grace be vainly brought me?

Righteous Judge, for sin's pollution
Grant thy gift of absolution,
Ere that day of retribution.

Guilty now I pour my moaning,
All my shame with anguish owning,
Spare, O God, thy suppliant groaning.

Through the sinful woman shriven,
Through the dying thief forgiven,
Thou to me a hope hast given.

Worthless are my prayers and sighing,
Yet, good Lord, in grace complying,
Rescue me from fires undying.

With thy sheep a place provide me,
From the goats afar divide me,
To thy right hand do thou guide me.

When the wicked are confounded,
Doomed to flames of woe unbounded,
Call me with thy Saints surrounded.

Low I kneel with heart's submission,
See, like ashes, my contrition,
Help me in my last condition.

Ah! that day of tears and mourning,
From the dust of earth returning.

Man for judgment must prepare him,
Spare, O God, in mercy spare him.

Lord all pitying, Jesus blest,
Grant them thine eternal rest. Amen.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (5.25-29)

At that time, Jesus said to the multitudes of the Jews: Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself: And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man. Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God. And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.

OFFERTORY

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit: « deliver them from the lion's mouth, that hell swallow them not up, that they fall not into darkness, but let the standard bearer holy Michael lead them into that light: « Which thou didst promise of old Abraham and to his seed. We offer to thee, O Lord, sacrifices and prayers: « Do thou receive them on behalf of those souls of whom we make memorial this day. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death to that life, « Which thou didst promise of old to Abraham and his seed.

SECRET

Mercifully regard, we beseech thee, O Lord, the Sacrifice which we offer thee for the souls of thy servants and handmaidens: that to those to whom thou didst grant the favor of the Christian Faith thou wouldst also grant due reward. Through.

¶ The Dismissal is Requiescant in Pace (May they rest in peace), and the response is Amen. The blessing is not given.

¶ If the priest will celebrate the second or third mass of the day himself, he does not purify the vessels, but consumes the Precious Blood after purifying his fingers and covers the chalice with a pall, leaving it on the corporal. He says the ablution prayer, and then removes the pall, covers the chalice with the purificator, and then places the paten and pall on top. The next host to be consecrated is placed on the paten. This is all covered with a veil.

The Second Mass

¶ All as at the First Mass, except:

COLLECT

O God, Lord of foregiveness, grant to thy servants and handmaidens a place of refreshment, the happiness of rest, and the brightness of thy light. Through.

LESSON II Mach. 12.43-46.

In those days: The noble Judas, making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection. (For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous and vain to pray for the dead,) And because he considered that they who had fallen asleep with godliness, had great grace laid up for them. It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (6.37-40)

At that time: Jesus said unto the multitudes of the Jews: All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me: and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out. Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him that sent me. Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day. And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son and believeth in him may have life everlasting. And I will raise him up in the last day.

SECRET

Be favorable, O Lord, to our supplication for the souls of thy servants and handmaidens, for whom we offer to thee the Sacrifice of praise: that thou wouldst vouchsafe to grant them fellowship with thy Saints. Through.

The Third Mass

¶ All as at the First Mass, except:

O God, giver of pardon and lover of the salvation of mankind, we beseech thy mercy, that through the intercession of Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin and of all the Saints, thou wouldst grant to the souls of thy servants and handmaidens who have passed out of this life, the fellowship of everlasting bliss. Through.

LESSON Apoc. 14.13.

In those days: I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me: Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. From henceforth now, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors. For their works follow them.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (6.51-55)

At that time: Jesus said unto the multitudes of the Jews: I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

SECRET

O God, whose mercies are without number, graciously receive our humble prayers, and through these Sacraments of our salvation, grant to the souls of all the faithful departed, to whom thou gavest grace to acknowledge thee, the remission of all their sins. Through.

POSTCOMMUNION

Grant, we beseech thee, almighty and merciful God: that the souls of thy servants and handmaidens, for whom we have offered to thy Majesty this Sacrifice of praise, may be freed by the power of this Sacrament from all their sins, and through thy mercy receive the bliss of eternal light. Through.
