11 December 2014 - Saint Damasus I, Pope & Confessor (within the Octave of the Immaculate Conception and Feria V after Advent II)

Semi-Double - White

Damasus I reigned as Pope from 366 to 384. He was raised in and served as Pope during the time of Western Christianity as a legal and official religion thanks to Emperor Constantine. Damasus fought to keep the Church together and prevent schism. For this effort, he suffered false accusations by the Arian heretics. He presided over the Council of Rome in 382 and assisted Saint Jerome in his vulgate translation of the Bible.

INTROIT John. 21. 15-17

Simon Peter, if thou lovest me, feed my lambs, feed my sheep.  Ps. 29.1. I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast upheld me: and hast not made mine enemies to rejoice over me. V.: Glory be.

COLLECT

Eternal Shepherd, regard graciously thy flock, and keep it with an everlasting protection, by the intecession of blessed Damasus thy Pope, whom thou hast constitued Shepherd of the whole Church. Through.

Commemoration: Advent II

O LORD, stir up our hearts to accept the message of thine only-begotten Son, so that, through his coming on earth, we may serve him always with a pure intention; who liveth and reigneth.

Commemorate: Octave of the Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M.

O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin didst prepare a worthy dwelling-place for thy Son: we beseech thee, that as by the foreseen death of the same thy Son, thou didst preserve her from all stain, so thou wouldst grant unto us also, through her intercession, to come unto thee with clean hearts. Through the same.

EPISTLE I Peter 5.1-4, 10-11.

Dearly Beloved: The ancients that are among you, I beseech who am myself also an ancient and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre's sake but voluntarily: Neither as lording it over the clergy but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart. And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you and confirm you and establish you. To him be glory and empire, for ever and ever. Amen.

Gradual Ps. 106.32, 31

Let them exalt him in the church of the people: and praise him in the chair of the ancients. V.: Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Matt. 16.18. Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (16.13-19)

At that time, Jesus came into the quarters of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is? But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answering said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

The Creed is said for the Octave.

OFFERTORY Jer. 1.9-10.

Behold I have given my words in thy mouth: lo, I have set thee over the nations, and over kingdoms, to root up, and to pull down, and to build, and to plant.

SECRET

By the offered gifts we beg thee, O Lord: enlighten kindly thy Church: so that thy flock everywhere may be increasing, and the Shepherds, under thy direction, may be pleasing to thy Name. Through.

Commemoration: Advent II

O Lord, let our humble offering of these prayers and sacrifices appease thee for our sins. We have no merits of our own to depend on; so assist us with thine aid. Through.

Commemorate: Octave of the Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M.

Receive the saving Victim we offer to thee, O Lord, on the solemn feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary: and grant that, as we confess that by thy preventing grace she was kept free from every stain of sin; so, by her intercession, we may be delivered from all our offenses. Through.

Preface: Of the BVM (for the Octave, as given on the Feast)

COMMUNION Matt. 16.18.

Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.

POSTCOMMUNION

O Lord, we beseech thee, graciously govern thy Church, which thou hast fed with a holy meal; so that, directed by a mighty wisdom, she may progress in liberty, and persist in the integrity of faith. Through.

Commemoration: Advent II

We have just been nourished with thy Body and Blood, O Lord. Teach us through this Sacramental rite to despise the things of earth and to yearn for the things of heaven. Through.

Commemorate: Octave of the Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M.

May the Sacraments which we have received, O Lord, our God, heal in us the wounds of that sin, from which thou didst alone preserve the Immaculate Conception of Blessed Mary. Through.
