4 October 2014 - Saint Francis of Assisi, Confessor

Greater Double – White

Founder of the the Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St. Clare, and the Third Order of St. Francis, all known as the Franciscans. Born in Assisi, Spoleto, in the Holy Roman Empire as the son of a silk merchant, he had a privileged upbringing that comes with wealth. He fought in the army of Assisi. On one occasion, while on his way to war, he had a vision that he should return. A distaste for worldly things began to grow in him, and he soon developed a following. His new order was authorized by Innocent the third in 1210. A few years later, he tried to convert the Sultan to Christianity to put an end to the bloody slaughter of the Crusades. He received the Stigmata in 1224 and died in 1226. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. He is Patron Saint of animals and one of the two Patron Saints of Italy.

EPISTLE Gal. 6.14-18

Brethren, But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And whosoever shall follow this rule, peace on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man be troublesome to me; for I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus in my body. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

GRADUAL Ps. 36.30-31

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom: and his tongue shall speak judgment. The law of his God is in his heart, and his steps shall not be supplanted.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Francis, poor and lowly, entereth rich into heaven, with the hymns of heaven is honored. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (11.25-30)

At that time, Jesus answered, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones. Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him. Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

OFFERTORY Ps. 88.25

My truth and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

SECRET

O Lord, sanctify these gifts which we dedicate to thee, and by the intercession of blessed Francis, cleanse us from every stain of sin. Through.
