5 April 2014 - Saint Vincent Ferrer, Confessor

Double – White

During Passiontide, beginning with Vespers on Saturday before Passion Sunday, the crosses, icons, and statues are either removed from view or veiled in purple cloth. They remain thus until the mass of Easter Vigil. Also, the Gloria Patri is omitted in all instances in masses of the sesason, but is included in feasts. The Psalm Judica me is also omitted from the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar in masses of the Season. In the Introit, the antiphon is repeated up until the Psalm as usual, but is repeated immediately after the Psalm is recited (as there is no Gloria Patri). Musical instruments, including bells, are not heard after the Gloria in Excelsis at the Maundy Thursday mass until the Gloria of Easter Vigil.

INTROIT Ps. 36.30-31.

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom and his tongue shall speak judgement: the law of his God is in his heart. Ps. 36.1. Be not emulous of evildoers: nor envy them that work iniquity. V.: Glory be.

Collect

O God, who didst vouchsafe to glorify thy Church by the merits and preaching of blessed Vincent, thy Confessor: grant to us thy servants that we may be taught by his example, and delivered by his patronage from all adversities.

Then under one ending commemorate Saturday after Lent IV.

COLLECT

O Lord, may thy grace bring us the fruitful effects of our devoted love, for the Lenten fast that we observe will be of profit to us only if it pleaseth thee. Through.

LESSON Ecclus. 31.8-11.

Blessed is the man that is found without blemish, and that hath not gone after gold, nor put his trust in money nor in treasures. Who is he, and we will praise him? For he hath done wonderful things in his life. Who hath been tried thereby, and made perfect, he shall have glory everlasting: he that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed: and could do evil things, and hath not done them: therefore are his goods established in the Lord, and all the Church of the Saints shall declare his alms.

GRADUAL Ps. 91.13,14.

The just shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow up like the cedar of Libanus in the house of the Lord.

Tract Ps. 111.1-3

Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he shall delight exceedingly in his commandments.
V:. His seed shall be mighty upon earth : the generation of the righteous shall be blessed.
V.: Glory and wealth shall be in his house: and his justice remaineth for ever and ever.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (12.35-40)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands. And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of Man will come.

OFFERTORY Ps. 88.25.

My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my Name shall his horn be exalted.

Secret

We offer thee, O Lord, this sacrifice of praise in memory of thy Saints. Free us from evil now and in the future through their intercession.

Then under one ending commemorate Saturday after Lent IV.

SECRET

Accept our gifts as a peace offering, O Lord, and by the constraint of thy mercy make our rebellious wills submit to thee. Through.

Communion Matt. 24.46-47.

Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord cometh he shall find watching: amen I say to you, he shall place him over all his goods.

Postcommunion

Refreshed by meat and drink from heaven, O God, we humbly entreat thee, that we may be protected by the prayers of him in whose memory we have partaken.

Then under one ending commemorate Saturday after Lent IV.

POSTCOMMUNION

We pray thee, O Lord, purify us through this Sacrament and make us pleasing to thee by its grace. Through.

PROPER LAST GOSPEL

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (8.12-20)

At that time, Jesus spoke to the multitudes of Jews, saying: I am the light of the world. He that followeth me walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life. The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself. Thy testimony is not true. Jesus answered and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came and whither I go. You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man. And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. And in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true. I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me. They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also. These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
