The liturgy of the Chrism Mass is provided after that of the mass of the day.

N.b. The Chrism Mass is said by the Bishop Ordinary on this day or else on Tuesday, but it does not take the place of the mass of the day. The mass of the day is typically said in the morning, and the Chrism Mass is said in the evening. Alternatively, the Chrism mass may be celebrated on the morning of Holy Thursday using the special forms thereof appointed in the missal. 



INTROIT Ps. 34.1-2

Privileged Pontifical Mass of the First Class – White

¶ This mass is said only by the Bishop Ordinary in his cathedral. It is said during Holy Week on Monday or Tuesday. It does not take the place of the mass of the day. Instead, the mass of the day is said as usual in the morning, and this mass is said in the afternoon. However, if the oils are to be blessed on Holy Thursday, then this mass is not used, but instead the one appointed for that day.

¶ It is during this mass that the three sacred oils, the Oil of the Sick, the Holy Chrism, and the Oil of the Catechumens, are blessed and consecrated by the Bishop for the use by the clergy throughout the Diocese. 


¶ The complete form and many of the instructions for the blessings of the Holy Oils are included here for the purpose of familiarity of those witnessing this mass, whether done as a separate mass early in Holy Week or at the Mass of Holy Thursday. 
INTROIT Ex. 30.25,31

Thou shalt make the holy oil of unction, and thou shalt say to the people of Israel: This oil of unction shall be holy unto me throughout your generations. Ps. 88.2. The mercies of the Lord I will sing forever. I will shew forth thy truth to generation and generation. V. Thou shalt.

In thy clemency, O Lord, may the power of this sacrifice both drive out the old man and increase in us the newness of life unto salvation. Through.

PREFACE OF THE CHRISM MASS

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, humbly to beg thee in thy clemency to confirm this Chrism, thy creature, into a sacrament of perfected salvation for those soon to be renewed in the spiritual laver of Baptism; may the anointing of sanctification be poured over each holy temple and cleanse him from the native corruption of birth; and may each exhale the perfume of pleasing innocence of life; and in accordance with the sign instituted by thee for this, may they be imbued with the office of King and Priest and Prophet and vested in robes of unstained dignity, through Jesus Christ our Lord : Through whom Angels praise thy Majesty, Dominations worship, Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the hosts of Heaven with blessed Seraphim unite, exult, and celebrate. And we entreat that thou wouldst bid our voices to be heard with theirs, singing with lowly praise:

First Blessing: Oil of the Sick

¶ In the Canon of the Mass, after the Prayer Nobis quoque peccatoribus, the Archdeacon calls for the oil for the Oil of the Sick to be brought from the sacristy. After the blessing has been done, the oil is returned to the sacristy and the mass continues. The Faithful do not receive communion at this mass; only the clergy do so.

¶ First the Bishop cleans his hands in a bowl of water on the altar so that he may disjoin his thumbs and fingers. This water is then put into the sacrarium later.

¶ The Bishop then genuflects to the Blessed Sacrament, turns, and descends to the lowest step of the altar. His thumbs and forefingers remained joined as usual. There he accepts the mitre, which is placed on his head by the First Assistant Deacon or another attendant. He sits at the faldstool before a table facing the Blessed Sacrament. The twelve priests, seven deacons, and seven sub-deacons stand in order behind him; first the priests, then the seven deacons, then the sub-deacons. The Deacon of the Oil of the Catechumens is to the left of the rest of the Deacons, and the Deacon of the Chrism is to the right of them. The Sub-Deacon of the Oil of the Sick is to the right of the rest of the Sub-Deacons, with the Sub-Deacon of the Balsam to the left of them. (These directions are given facing the altar.) In front of these clergy are the Deacon and Sub-Deacon of the Mass. The Assistant Deacons stand immediately behind the Deacon and Sub-Deacon of the Mass. The Assistant Priest stands to the left of the Bishop. The Archdeacon stands in front of the table, taking care not to turn his back to the Blessed Sacrament. The four Bishop’s Chaplains stands in their usual order behind the seven Sub-Deacons.

¶ Then the Archdeacon sings, in the tone of the Epistle:


Oleum infirmorum.

¶ Then the Sub-Deacon appointed for the Oil of the Sick proceeds to the Sacristy, flanked by two acolytes.

¶ There the appointed Sub-Deacon takes the contained of oil of the sick and carries it before the Bishop, taking care not to turn his back to the Blessed Sacrament.

¶ The Sub-Deacon presents it to the hands of the Archdeacon, saying (not singing):


Oleum infirmorum.

¶ The Archdeacon receives the Oil of the Sick and places it on the table before the Bishop for him to bless.

 ¶ The Bishop rises with the mitre to exorcise and bless the Oil of the Sick in a low voice, but loud enough so that the priests attending him may hear.


Exorcism

Exorcizo te, immundissime spiritus, omnisque incursio satanae, et omne phantasma : in nomine Pa+tris, et Fi+lii, et Spiritus + Sancti; ut recedas ab hoc oleo, ut possit effici unctio spiritalis ad corroborandum templum Dei vivi; ut in eo possit Spiritus Sanctus habitare, per nomen Dei Patris omnipotentis, et per nomen dilectissimi Filii ejus Domini nostri Jesu Christi, qui venturus est judicare vivos et mortuos, ct saeculum per ignem. R. Amen.

¶ Here the mitre is removed from the Bishop, and he blesses the Oil in the same voice:

V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

Emitte, quaesumus, Domine, Spiritum Sanctum tuum Paraclitum de coelis in hanc pinguedinem olivae, quam de viridi ligno producere dignatus es, ad refectionem mentis, et corporis; ut tua sancta bene+dictione, sit omni hoc unguento coelestis medicinae peruncto tutamen mentis et corporis, ad evacuandos omnes dolores, omnes infirmitates, omnemque aegritudinem mentis et corporis, unde unxisti Sacerdotes, Reges, Prophetas et Martyres; sit Chrisma tuum perfectum, Domine, nobis a te benedictum, permanens in visceribus nostris. In nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi.

 ¶ Here the Bishop again takes the mitre and sits. He cleans his hands. After his hands have been washed, he stands and goes with the Sacred Ministers and attendants back to the altar. 

¶ As the Bishop goes to the altar, the Sub-Deacon of the Oil of the Sick takes the Oil of the Sick back to the Sacristy. The mass continues as usual. 

Second, Third, and Fourth Blessings:
Balsam or Fragrance for the Holy Chrism, The Holy Chrism, and The Oil of the Catechumens

¶ These blessings are done after the Bishop has received communion and the ablutions. The Archdeacon calls for the oil for the Holy Chrism and for the Oil of the Catechumens, and these are brought, along with the balsam from the sacristy. After the blessings according to the form in the Pontificale, the Bishop returns to the throne or faldstool and continues the conclusion of the mass.

¶ The Archdeacon sings in the tone of the Epistles:

Oleum ad sanctum Chrisma.

¶ Then the Archdeacon sings in the same tone:

Oleum Catechumenorum.

¶ Here the thurifer approaches the Bishop, and the Bishop, giving up the mitre, blesses the incense as usual and places some in the thurible. He then takes the mitre again.

¶ Then the seven Sub-Deacons walk to the Sacristy singly, except that the Sub-Deacon of the Oil of the Sick walks singly behind the rest. They are followed by the five of the seven Deacons who are not carrying the oils, walking singly, and then the twelve priests walking side-by-side. After them comes the Sub-Deacon of the Balsam, and then the Deacon of the Chrism. Both of these are also flanked by two acolytes. Then follows the Deacon of the Oil of the Catechumens, flanked by two acolytes. The processional cross may be carried at the head of the procession by the Sub-Deacon of the Cross, in between two acolytes as usual, with the thurifer before him. Torchbearers may optionally follow the Cross and precede the Sub-Deacons.

¶ In the Sacristy, the Sacristan gives the oil for the Oil of the Catechumens, the balsam, and the oil for the Sacred Chrism to the appropriate Deacons. The Sub-Deacon and Deacons hold the oils before their breast as they return.

¶ During this procession the Cantors and Choir sing O Redemptor as below:


Cantor: O Redemptor, sume carmen temet concinentium.

¶ The Choir repeats the verse above.

Cantor: Audi, Judex mortuo rum, una spes mortalium, audi voces proferentum donum pacis praevium.
Chorus: O Redemptor, etc. (as above)

Cantor: Arbor foeta alma luce hoc sacrandum protulit: fert hoc prona praesens turba Salvatori saeculi.

Chorus: O Redemptor, etc. (as above)

Cantor: Stans ad aram imo supplex infulatus Pontifex, debitum persolvit omne, consecrto Chrismate.

Chorus: O Redemptor, etc. (as above)

Cantor: Consecrare tu digna re, Rex perennis patriae, hoc olivum, signum vivum, jura contra daemonum.

Chorus: O Redemptor, etc. (as above)

¶ After obtaining the oils, all return in the same order and take up their positions around the table. The Sub-Deacon carrying the Balsam, then the Deacon of the Oil of the Catechumens, and then the Deacon of the Sacred Chrism stand in that order on the Epistle side of the table facing towards the Gospel side of the table. The Archdeacon is at the Gospel side of the table facing the Epistle side of the table.

Blessing of the Balsam 

¶ Nota bene: If the Oil for the Sacred Chrism is to be pre-mixed with its balsam or other fragrance, then the fragrance should be blessed before being added to the oil prior to the Chrism mass, using the form in this section, with the addition of the versicle and response V. Adjutorium nostrum in nomine domini. R. Qui fecit caelum et terram as usual. If the oil and fragrance have been mixed prior to this blessing, then the blessing of the fragrance should be performed over the mixed oil and fragrance anyway prior to the Chrism Mass, but only through the prayer Creaturarum omnium, not including the prayer at the mixing. Such blessings prior to the mass follow the standard rubrics for solemn blessings, and the bishop is vested in either white stole, cope, and gold mitre, or in choir dress with biretta.

¶ First the Sub-Deacon carrying the Balsam approaches the Archdeacon and gives to him the Balsam, saying nothing. The Sub-Deacon genuflects to the cross and returns to his place with the other Sub-Deacons.

¶ The Archdeacon places the Balsam on the table before the Bishop.

¶ The Bishop rises, giving up the mitre, and says:


V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Oremus.

Deus, mysteriorum coelestium et virtutum omnium praeparator, nostras, quaesumus, preces exaudi, hanc odoriferam sicci corticis lacrimam (quae felicis virgae profluendo sudorem, sacerdotali nos opimat unguento) acceptabilem tuis praesta mysteriis, et concessa benedictione sancti+fica. Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum Filium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.

Oremus.

Creaturarum omnium, Domine, procreator, qui per Moysen famulum tuum permistis herbis aromatum fieri praecepisti sanctiticationem unguenti; clementiam tuam suppliciter deposcimus, ut huic unguento, quod radix produxit stirpea, spiritualem gratiam largiendo, plenitudinem sancti+ficationis infundas. Sit nobis, Domine, fidei hilaritate conditum; sit sacerdotalis unguenti Chrisma perpetuum; sit ad coelestis vexilli impressionem dignissimum; ut quicumque Baptismate sacro renati isto fuerint liquore peruncti, corporum atque animarum benedictionem plenissimiam consequantur, et beatae fidei collato munere perenniter amplientur. Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum Filium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.

 ¶ Then the Bishop stands and takes the mitre. A little of the Oil for the Sacred Chrism is mixed with the balsam. Then the Bishop, still with the mitre, says:

Oremus.

Dominum Deum nostrum omnipotentem, qui incomprehensibilem unigeniti Filii sui sibique coaeterni divinitatem mirabili dispositione verae humanitati inseparabiliter conjunxit, et cooperante gratia Spiritus Sancti, oleo exsultationis prae participibus suis linivit, ut homo, fraude diaboli perditus, gemina et singulari constans materia, perenni redderetur, de qua exciderat, hereditati; quatenus hos ex diversis creaturarum speciebus liquores creatos sanctae Trinitatis perfectione bene+dicat, et benedicendo sancti+ficet, concedatque, ut simul permisti unam fiant; et quicumque exterius inde perunctus fuerit, ita interius liniatur, quod omnibus sordibus corporalis materiae carens, se participem regni coelestis effici gratuletur. Per eumdem Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum Filium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate ejusdem Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.

Consecration of the Holy Chrism 

 ¶ Then the Bishop sits, still retaining the mitre.

¶ The Deacon with the Oil for the Chrism hands it to the Archdeacon, saying nothing. He then genuflects to the cross and returns to the Epistle side in front of the table. The Archdeacon places the Oil for the Chrism on the table before the Bishop, saying:

Oleum ad sanctum Chrisma.

 ¶ The Bishop, while sitting with the mitre, breathes on the oil for the Holy Chrism three times in the form of a cross.

¶ The twelve priests come forward from the Epistle side, one at a time, genuflect to the cross, they breath on the oil for the Holy Chrism in the same manner as the Bishop. Each priest, having finished this, genuflects to the cross again and returns to their place.

 ¶ The Bishop then stands with the mitre to exorcize the Chrism.


Exorcism

Exorcizo te, creatura olei, per Deum Patrem omnipotentem, qui fecit coelum et terram, mare, et omnia quae in eis sunt, ut omnis virtus adversarii, omnis exercitus diaboli, omnisque incursio, et omne phantasma satanae eradicetur, et effugetur a te; ut fias omnibus qui ex te ungendi sunt, in adoptionem filiorum, per Spiritum Sanctum. In nomine Dei Pa+tris omnipotentis, et Jesu + Christi Filii ejus Domini nostri, qui cum eo vivit et regnat Deus, in unitate ejusdem Spiritus + Sancti.

¶ Then giving up the mitre, he in the solemn tone as usual:

V. Per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.
V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
V. Sursum corda. R. Habemus ad Dominum.
V. Gratias agamus Domino Deo nostro. R. Dignum et justum est.

¶ The preface is chanted in the Tone of the Preface ad libitum.

Vere dignum et justum est, aequum et salutare, nos tibi semper, et ubique gratias agere, Domine sancte, Pater omnipotens, aeterne Deus: Qui in principio, inter cetera bonitatis tuae munera, terram producere fructifera ligna jussisti, inter quae hujus pinguissimi liquoris ministrae olivae nascerentur, quarum fructus sacro Chrismati deservi ret. ¶ Then the Bishop mixes the balsam and oil for the Holy Chrism together, saying:

Haec commixtio liquorum fiat omnibus ex ea perunctis propitiatio, et custodia salutaris in saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.

¶ Then the Deacon of the Chrism genuflects to the cross, and then holds up the ampulla containing the Holy Chrism for all to see.

¶ Then the Bishop sings in the tone of the Epistles:


AVE, sanctum Chrisma.

¶ The Bishop sings this salutation to the Chrism three times in total, each time on a higher note. He then kisses the lip of the ampulla containing the oil.

 ¶ The Bishop sits and takes the mitre.

¶ Then each of the twelve priests comes singly in front of the table via the Epistle side, genuflecting to the cross, and then to the Chrism. Each priest sings in the tone of the Epistle: Ave, sanctum Chrisma, as the Bishop did, three times, each on a higher note. They then kiss the lip of the ampulla containing the Chrism, genuflect to the cross, and proceed back to their place via the Gospel side.

¶ The Deacon of the Chrism then places the Chrism on the Gospel side of the table and then stands where convenient on the Gospel side of the table.

Blessing of the Oil of the Catechumens 

¶ The Deacon of the Oil of the Catechumens hands the oil to the Archdeacon in the usual manner, genuflects to the cross, and remains in front of the table on the Epistle side.

¶ The Archdeacon places the oil on the table, saying:


Oleum Catechumenorum.

 ¶ The Bishop, sitting with the mitre, breathes on the oil for the Oil of the Catechumens, as was done on the oil for the Holy Chrism. The twelve priests do similarly as before.

 ¶ Then the Bishop rises with the mitre and exorcises the oil.

¶ Then, giving up the mitre, the Bishop stands to bless the oil.

¶ Then the Deacon of the Oil of the Catechumens holds up the oil for all to see. The Bishop salutes the oil as was done for the Chrism, in the tone of the Epistles, three times, each time beginning on a successively higher note, with:

AVE, sanctum oleum.

 ¶ Then the Bishop sits with the mitre.

¶ The twelve priests come and salute the Oil of the Catechumens in front of the table with Ave, sanctum oleum. in the same manner as they did for the Holy Chrism.


Return of the Holy Chrism and Oil of the Catechumens to the Sacristy 

¶ Then the Deacon of the Oil of the Catechumens, flanked by two acolytes, takes the Oil. He is followed by the Deacon of the Chrism, holding the Chrism, flanked by two acolytes. The procession forms to the sacristy as before, with the Deacons of the Oil of the Catechumens and the Holy Chrism at the end. The Sub-Deacon of the Balsam walks at the end of the Sub-Deacons, but before the Sub-Deacon of the Oil of the Sick. The Holy Oils are returned to the Sacristy while the cantors and choir sing:

Cantor: O Redemptor, sume carmen temet concinentium.

Choir: O Redemptor, sume carmen temet concinentium.

Cantor: Ut novetur sexus omnis unctione Chrismatis: ut sanetur sauciata dignitatis glori a.

 ¶ After washing his hands at the table, the Bishop stands and returns with the Sacred Ministers and other attendants to the throne to complete the mass, where it resumes with the General Thanksgiving.

Form for Blessing Oil of the Catechumens Outside of the Chrism Mass 

 ¶ The oil is brought before the Bishop, who is vested in either rochet or amice and alb, white stole, white cope, and golden mitre. He sits at the faldstool in a convenient location with a table before him. A Deacon brings the oil to him, or else the oil has been placed in advance on the table.

 ¶ The Bishop, sitting with the mitre, breathes on the oil for the Oil of the Catechumens, as was done on the oil for the Holy Chrism (see above for the blessing at the Chrism Mass).

 ¶ Then the Bishop rises with the mitre and exorcises the oil.
