EPISTLE Rom. 15.4-13

Brethren: For what things soever were written were written for our learning: that, through patience and the comfort of the scriptures, we might have hope. Now the God of patience and of comfort grant you to be of one mind, one towards another, according to Jesus Christ: That with one mind and with one mouth you may glorify God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore, receive one another, as Christ also hath received you, unto the honour of God. For I say that Christ Jesus was minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: But that the Gentiles are to glorify God for his mercy, as it is written: Therefore will I confess to thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles and will sing to thy name. And again he saith: Rejoice ye Gentiles, with his people. And again: Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles: and magnify him, all ye people. And again, Isaias saith: There shall be a root of Jesse; and he that shall rise up to rule the Gentiles, in him the Gentiles shall hope. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing: that you may abound in hope and in the power of the Holy Ghost.

GRADUAL Ps. 49.2-3, 5

Out of Sion, perfect in beauty, God shall come revealed.
V. Gather before him his saints, who have ratified his covenant with sacrifice.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 121.1 I rejoiced at the tidings which were told me, We shall go into the house of the Lord. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (11.2-10)

AT that time, when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him: Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another? And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen. The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me. And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings. But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yea I tell you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before my face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

  The Creed is said.

Saint Peter Chrysologus
Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth: and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and under-standing. Ps.91.2. It is good to give praise to the Lord: and to sing to thy Name, O Most High. V.: Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, who didst choose blessed Peter Chrysologus, the illustrious Doctor, and miraculously point him out to rule and instruct thy Church: grant, we beseech thee, that as we have had him for our teacher on earth, so we may be worthy to have him for our intercessor in heaven. Through.

Commemoration: St. Barbara

O God, who among the other marvels of thy power, hast granted even to the weaker sex the victory of martyrdom: mercifully grant: that we who celebrate the heavenly birthday of blessed Barbara, thy Virgin and Martyr, may, by her example draw nearer to thee. Through.

EPISTLE II Tim. 4. 1-8

Dearly beloved, I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

GRADUAL Ecclus. 44. 16, 20

Behold the great priest, who in his days pleased God. V.: There was not found the like to him, who kept the law of the Most High.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Ps.109.4. Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (5. 13-19)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY Ps. 91. 13

The just shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow up like the cedar of Libanus.
