Greater Privileged Feria – Purple
During Lent, the color of the day is purple. If there is a feast, it is celebrated using its proper color. If a feast or votive mass is said during Lent on a ferial day, the feria is always commemorated under one ending with the collect of the feast before the seasonal collects and other commemorations, and the Last Gospel is the Gospel from the ferial mass appointed for that day. The Nuptial votive mass is not said in Lent, but is merely commemorated (see the rubrics). Ferial masses in Lent have appointed prayers over the people at the end. These are used only at the ferial masses, and not at feasts. The Gloria in Excelsis is not said at any mass except feasts during Lent. During Passiontide, the Gloria Patri is omitted from all Masses and Offices of the Season.
Dominical Preces are said at Prime and Compline on Sundays during Lent. Preces are said kneeling at all ferial offices of the season.
Instruction regarding anticipation of Offices
and Rites during Lent
1. The custom as given in the rubrics of the breviary of anticipating the Offices of Lent is to be the preferred usage. Matins and Lauds should be said the evening prior. Other offices are said in the morning hours, and Vespers is said prior to the principal meal of the day, which same is taken to be the midday meal. Compline should be said after Vespers and typically around mid-afternoon to sunset.
2. Mass of the Institution of the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday, the Maundy itself, and Vespers should all be said in the morning.
3. If the Holy Oils are to be blessed on Maundy Thursday, then they are blessed in the usual manner at the Solemn Mass of Holy Thursday, and the specific Chrism Mass is not used. If they are to be blessed on Monday or Tuesday of Holy Week, then the mass is the Chrism Mass as given in the missal, and the Chrism Mass on those days should be said in the afternoon or evening, with the morning mass being of the day of Holy Week.
4. If there are Public Penitents to be re-admitted to the Church on Holy Thursday, then it must be after Lauds of Holy Thursday. This rite may take place either with a votive mass for the Forgiveness of Sins on Wednesday evening following Lauds, or else immediately preceding the Mass of Holy Thursday.
5. The Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday is to be said likewise in the morning prior to Vespers of that day.
6. The Liturgy of Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil should be said in the morning and followed by Vespers as given in the Second Edition of the Missale Anglicanum Editio Latina et Anglica.
