Saint Agatha was born in Sicily around 231. She dedicated herself to God and thus rejected the advances of a Roman Prefect. She was put in prison, and the various tortures she endured included the cutting off of her breasts. Sentenced to be burned at the stake, she was spared by an earthquake. St. Peter the Apostle appeared to her in prison and healed her wounds. She died in prison. Agatha is among the women commemorated in the Canon of the Mass.

LET us rejoice in the Lord and celebrate a festival day in honor of blessed Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, at whose martyrdom the Angels rejoice, and give praise to the Son of God. Ps. 44.2. My heart hath uttered a good word: I speak my works to the King. V. Glory be.
