27 October 2014 - Vigil of Saints Simon and Jude

Minor Vigil – Purple

INTROIT Ps. 78, 11, 12, 10.

Let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee, O Lord; render to our neighbors sevenfold in their bosom; revenge the blood of thy Saints, which hath been shed. Ps. 78.1. O God, the heathens are come into thine inheritance; they have defiled thy holy temple: they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit. V. Glory be.

¶ The Gloria in excelsis is not said.

COLLECT

We beseech thee, Almighty God, to have respect unto thy people who this day anticipate the heavenly birthday of thy glorious Apostles Simon and Jude: that as they continually stand before thy Majesty as our intercessors; so we may the more worthily receive thy bounties. Through.

EPISTLE I Cor. 4.9-14.

Brethren: We are made a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ: we are weak, but you are strong: you are honourable, but we without honour. Even unto this hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no fixed abode. And we labour, working with our own hands. We are reviled: and we bless. We are persecuted: and we suffer it. We are blasphemed: and we entreat. We are made as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all, even until now. I write not these things to confound you: but I admonish you as my dearest children.

GRADUAL Ps. 78.10,2.

O let the vengeance of thy servants’ blood that is shed be openly showed. V. The dead bodies of thy servants, O Lord, have they given to the meat unto the fowls of the air: and the flesh of thy Saints unto the beasts of the land.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (15.1-7)

At that time, Jesus did say unto his disciples: I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean, by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will: and it shall be done unto you.

OFFERTORY Ps. 149.5-6.

Let the Saints be joyful with glory, let them rejoice in their beds: let the praises of God be in their mouth.

SECRET

We humbly beseech thee, O Lord, that although our consciences be burdened by reason of our sins: the gifts wherewith we do prevent the festival of thy holy Apostles Simon and Jude, may by their intercession be rendered acceptable in thy sight. Through.

COMMUNION Ps. 78.2,11.

The dead bodies of thy servants, O Lord, have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the air, and the flesh of thy Saints unto the beasts of the land: according to the greatness of thy power, preserve thou these that are appointed to die.

POSTCOMMUNION

O Lord, who hast suffered us to receive this holy Sacrament: we humbly beseech thee; that, at the intercession of thy blessed Apostles Simon and Jude, those things which we have performed in a temporal mystery may be fulfilled in us unto life everlasting. Through.
