EPISTLE Apoc. 7.2-12

In those days, behold, I, John, saw another Angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the sign of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four Angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, Hurt not the earth nor the sea, nor the trees, till we sign the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them that were signed: a hundred and forty-four thousand were signed out of every tribe of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Juda were twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Ruben twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Aser twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Nephthali twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Manasses twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Zabulon twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand signed: of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand signed. After this, I saw a great multitude which no man could number, of all nations, and tribes, and peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and in sight of the Lamb. And all the Angels stood round about the throne, and the ancients, and the four living creatures; and they fell down before the throne upon their faces, and adored God, saying, Amen. Benediction, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, honor, and power, strength to our God for ever and ever. Amen.

GRADUAL Ps. 33.10,11

Fear the Lord, all ye his Saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. But they that seek the Lord shall not be deprived of any good.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Matt. 11.28. Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (5.1-12)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed: nor hidden that shall not be known. For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers shall be preached on the housetops. And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you shall fear: Fear ye him who, after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you; Fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows. And I say to you: whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the Angels of God.

The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY Wis. 3.1-2,3.

The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of malice shall not touch them: in the sight of the unwise they seemed to die, but they are in peace. Alleluia.

SECRET

EPISTLE Apoc. 5.6-12

In those days, Behold, I, John, saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the ancients, a Lamb, standing as it were slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth. And He came, and took the book out of the right hand of Him that sat on the throne: and when He had opened the book, the four living creatures, and the four and twenty ancients fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of saints; and they sung a new canticle, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to take the book, and to open the seals thereof; because thou wert slain, and hast redeemed us to God, in thy blood, out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation, and hast made us to God a kingdom and priests; and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne, and the living creatures and the ancients, and the number of them was thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, The Lamb that was slain is worthy to receive power, and divinity, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and benediction for ever and ever. Amen.

GRADUAL Ps.149.5, 1

The saints shall rejoice in glory; they shall be joyful in their beds. V. Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle; let his praise be in the assembly of the saints.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (6.17-23)

At that time, Jesus coming down from the mountain stood in a plain place, and the company of his disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the seacoast both of Tyre and Sidon, who were come to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. And they that were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the multitude sought to touch him, for virtue went out from him, and healed all. And he, lifting up his eyes on his disciples, said, Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now, for you shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake: be glad in that day and rejoice, for behold, your reward is great in Heaven.

OFFERTORY Ps.149.5, 6

The saints shall rejoice in glory, they shall be joyful in their beds; the high praises of God shall be in their mouths.

28 October 2014 - Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles

Double of the Second Class – Red

Saint Simon the Apostle, known also as Simon Zealotes or Simon the Zealot, worked alongside Saint Jude the Apostle to evangelize in the early Church. Saint Jude, also known as Judas Thaddeus to distinguish him from the traitor of the same name, is believed to have been martyred in Beirut around 65 AD at the same time as Simon. Their remains are in one of the chapels within the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome.

INTROIT Ps. 138.17.

EPISTLE Eph. 4.7-13

Brethren, To every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the giving of Christ. Wherefore He saith: Ascending on high, He led captivity captive; He gave gifts to men. Now, that He ascended, what is it, but because He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens, that He might fill all things. And He gave some Apostles, and some Prophets, and other some Evangelists, and other some Pastors and Doctors, for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ; until we all meet into the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ.

GRADUAL Ps. 44.17-18

Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth; they shall remember thy name, O Lord. Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee: therefore shall peoples praise thee.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 138.17. To me thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honorable: their principality is exceedingly strengthened. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (15.17-25)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: These things I command you, that you love one another. If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you. If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for my name's sake: because they know not him who sent me. If I had not come, and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. He that hateth me, hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no other man hath done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. But that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law: They hated me without cause.

EPISTLE I Cor. 4.9-14.

Brethren: We are made a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ: we are weak, but you are strong: you are honourable, but we without honour. Even unto this hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no fixed abode. And we labour, working with our own hands. We are reviled: and we bless. We are persecuted: and we suffer it. We are blasphemed: and we entreat. We are made as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all, even until now. I write not these things to confound you: but I admonish you as my dearest children.

GRADUAL Ps. 78.10,2.

O let the vengeance of thy servants’ blood that is shed be openly showed. V. The dead bodies of thy servants, O Lord, have they given to the meat unto the fowls of the air: and the flesh of thy Saints unto the beasts of the land.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (15.1-7)

At that time, Jesus did say unto his disciples: I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean, by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will: and it shall be done unto you.

Double of the Second Class – White

This feast is always kept on the last Sunday of October.

Saint Evaristus was the fifth Pope. He is believed to have divided Rome into the several "titles" and appointed deacons for the City. He is likely buried near St. Peter the Apostle.

Brethren, we give thanks to God the Father, who hath made us worthy to be partakers of the lot of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of the Son of his love. In whom we have redemption through his Blood, the remission of sins; who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature for in him were all things created in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominations, or principalities, or powers : all things were created by him and in him. And he is before all, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the Church. Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he may hold the primacy: because in him it hath well pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell; and through him to reconcile all things unto himself, making peace through the blood of his cross, both as to the things that are on earth, and the things that are in Heaven, in Christ Jesus Our Lord.

GRADUAL Ps. 71.8,11

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Dan. 7.14. His power is an everlasting power that shall not be taken away: and his kingdom that shall not be destroyed. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (18.33-37)

At that time: Pilate said to
Jesus: Art thou the King of the Jews? Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me? Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done? Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence. Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a King. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth, Everyone that is of the truth, heareth my voice.

25 October 2014 - Saints Chrysanthus and Daria, Martyrs

Simple – Red

Saint Chrysanthus was a Roman pagan who converted to Christianity. He convinced Daria, the Roman vestal virgin who had been arranged for him as a bride to convert and live in celibacy. He went about converting people to Christianity, which gained negative attention from the Tribune. Chrysanthus was arrested and tortured. His fortitude was such that the Tribune, his wife, their sons, and 72 soldiers became Christians. Claudius and his family were martyred by the Emperor. Daria was, according to legend, sent to be a prostitute, but was protected by a lioness. She was martyred by stoning, beheading, or by being buried alive.

Nota bene: The Saturday Office of the B.V.M. is said this day with commemoration of the feast. II Vespers and Compline are said of Christ the King, with commemoration of the simple feast.

EPISTLE II Cor. 6.4-10

Brethren: In all things let us exhibit ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in tribulation, in ne-cessities, in distresses, In stripes, in prisons, in seditions, in labours, in watchings, in fastings, In chastity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned, In the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armour of justice on the right hand and on the left; By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet known; As dying, and behold we live; as chastised, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as needy, yet enriching many; as having nothing, and possessing all things.

GRADUAL Ex. 15.11,6

Glorious is God in his Saints, marvelous in majesty, doing wonders. Thy right hand, O Lord, is magnified in strength: thy right hand hath slain the enemy.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ecclus. 44.14. The bodies of the Saints are buried in place, and their name liveth unto generation and generation. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (11.47-51)

At that time, Jesus said to the Scribes and Pharisees: Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them. Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchres. For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute. That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who was slain between the altar and the temple: Yea I say to you, It shall be required of this generation.

EPISTLE Tob. 12.7-15

In those days, the Angel Raphael said to Tobias: It is good to hide the secret of a king: but honourable to reveal and confess the works of God. Prayer is good with fasting and alms more than to lay up treasures of gold: For alms delivereth from death, and the same is that which purgeth away sins, and maketh to find mercy and life everlasting. But they that commit sin and iniquity are enemies to their own soul. I discover then the truth unto you, and I will not hide the secret from you. When thou didst pray with tears, and didst bury the dead, and didst leave thy dinner, and hide the dead by day in thy house, and bury them by night, I offered thy prayer to the Lord. And because thou wast acceptable to God, it was necessary that temptation should prove thee. And now the Lord hath sent me to heal thee, and to deliver Sara thy son's wife from the devil. For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord.

GRADUAL Tob. 8.3; Ps. 146.5

The Angel of the Lord, Raphael, took and bound the devil. Great is our Lord, and great is his power.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 137.1-2. The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent: thou art a priest for ever according of the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (5.1-4)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: Watch ye therefore, because ye know not what hour your Lord will come. But know this ye, that if the goodman of the house knew at what hour the thief would come, he would certainly watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Wherefore be you also ready, because at what hour you know not the Son of man will come. Who, thinkest thou, is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath appointed over his family, to give them meat in season? Blessed is that servant, whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing. Amen I say to you, he shall place him over all his goods.

Brethren: Be ye renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, who according in God is created in justice and holiness of truth. Wherefore, putting away lying, speak ye the truth every man with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your anger. Give not place to the devil. He that stole, let him now steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have something to give to him that suffereth need.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (22. 1-14)

At that time, Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king, who made a marriage for his son; and he sent his servants, to call them that were invited to the marriage, and they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited: Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come ye to the marraige. But they neglected; and went their way, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise; and the rest laid hands on his servants, and having treated them contumeliously, put them to death. But when the king had heard of it, he was angry; and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city. Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready, but they that were invited were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as you shall find, call to the marraige. And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good; and the marriage was filled with guests. And the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment: and he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having on a wedding garment? but he was silent. Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.

SEQUENCE

Day of Wrath and doom impeding, « David's word with Sibyl's blending. « Heaven and earth in ashes ending.

O what fear man's bosom rendeth « When from heaven the Judge descendeth, « On whose sentence all dependeth.

Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth, « Through earth's sepulchers it ringeth, « All before the throne it bringeth.

Death is struck, and nature quaking, « All creation is awaking, « To its Judge an answer making.

Lo, the book exactly worded, « Wherein all hath been recorded, « Thence shall judgment be awarded.

When the Judge his seat attaineth, « And each hidden deed arraigneth, « Nothing unavenged remaineth.

What shall I, frail man, be pleading? « Who for me be interceding, « When the just are mercy needing?

King of majesty tremendous, « Who dost free salvation send us, « Fount of pity, then befriend us.

Think, kind Jesus, my salvation « Caused thy wondrous Incarnation, « Leave me not to reprobation.

Faint and weary thou hast sought me, « On the Cross of suffering bought me, « Shall such grace be vainly brought me?

Righteous Judge, for sin's pollution « Grant thy gift of absolution, « Ere that day of retribution.

Guilty now I pour my moaning, « All my shame with anguish owning, « Spare, O God, thy suppliant groaning.

Through the sinful woman shriven, « Through the dying theif forgiven, « Thou to me a hope hast given.

Worthless are my prayers and sighing, « Yet, good Lord, in grace complying, « Rescue me from fires undying.

With thy sheep a place provide me, « From the goats afar divide me, « To thy right hand do thou guide me.

When the wicked are confounded, « Doomed to flames of woe unbounded, « Call me with thy Saints surrounded.

Low I kneel with heart's submission, « See, like ashes, my contrition, « Help me in my last condition.

Ah! that day of tears and mourning, « From the dust of earth returning.

Man for judgment must prepare him, « Spare, O God, in mercy spare him.

Lord all pitying, Jesus blest, « Grant them thine eternal rest. Amen.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (6.51-55)

At that time: Jesus said unto the multitudes of the Jews: I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

Simple - White

Saint Hilarion was born in Syria, south of Gaza. He converted to Christianity in Alexandria. He became a nomad, living in the dessert, and fasting regularly. Constantly seeking more reclusion, he was nevertheless followed by those wanting his counsel or help wherever he went. He died in Cyprus in 371.

Saint Ursula, according to legend, was a princess of pagan parents. She was sent on a voyage to join her future husband, and after a storm brought the ship in a single day to Gaul, she decided to undertake a pilgrimage. Coming to Rome, she persuaded the Pope to follow along with her and her virginal companions. They were massacred by the Hun near Cologne in about 393.

So speak ye, and so do, as being to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment without mercy to him that hath not done mercy. And mercy exalteth itself above judgment. What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him? And if a brother or sister be naked, and want daily food: And one of you say to them: Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit? So faith also, if it have not works, is dead in itself.

Brethren, I give thanks to God, who hath given the same carefulness for you in the heart of Titus. For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more careful, of his own will he went unto you. We have sent also with him the brother, whose praise is in the Gospel through all the churches. And not that only, but he was also ordained by the churches companion of our travels, for this grace, which is administered by us, to the glory of the Lord, and our determined will: Avoiding this, lest any man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us. For we forecast what may be good not only before God, but also before men. And we have sent with them our brother also, whom we have often proved diligent in many things; but now much more diligent, with much confidence in you, Either for Titus, who is my companion and fellow labourer towards you, or our brethren, the apostles of the churches, the glory of Christ. Wherefore shew ye to them, in the sight of the churches, the evidence of your charity, and of our boasting on your behalf.

GRADUAL Ps. 18.5,2

Their sound went forth into all earth: and their words to the ends of the world. The heavens show forth the glory of God, and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. John 15.16.
I have chosen you out of the world, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (10.1-9)

At that time, Jesus appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come. And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest. Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way. Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house. And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

EPISTLE Eph. 3.8-9, 14-19

Brethren: To me, the least of all the saints, is given this grace, to preach among the Gentiles, the unsearchable riches of Christ, And to enlighten all men, that they may see what is the dispensation of the mystery which hath been hidden from eternity in God, who created all things. For this cause I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom all paternity in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened by his Spirit with might unto the inward man, That Christ may dwell by faith in your hearts; that being rooted and founded in charity, You may be able to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth: To know also the charity of Christ, which surpasseth all knowledge, that you may be filled unto all the fulness of God.

GRADUAL Cant. 8.7; Ps. 72.26

Many waters cannot quench charity, neither can the floods drown it. My flesh and my heart have fainted away: Thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion for ever.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Cant. 7.10.
I to my beloved and his turning is towards me. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (11.25-30)

At that time, Jesus answered, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones. Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him. Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

OFFERTORY Zach. 9.17

For what is the good thing of him, and what is his beautiful thing, but the corn of the elect and the wind springing forth virgins?

SECRET

May the offerings of thy people be accepted by thee, O Lord: and grant that we may be inflamed by that divine fire coming from the Heart of thy Son, which burnt vehemently within blessed Margaret Mary. Through the same.

16 October 2014 - Saint Hedwig, Widow

Semi-Double - White

INTROIT Ps. 118.75, 120.

I KNOW, O Lord, that thy judgments are equity, and in thy truth thou hast humbled me: pierce thou my flesh with thy fear, I am afraid of thy judgments. Ps. 118.1. Blessed are the undefiled in the way: who walk in the law of the Lord. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, who didst teach blessed Hedwig to renounce the pomps of this world, that with her whole heart, she might follow the humble way of thy Cross: grant that, through her merits and example, we may learn to trample under foot the perishable delights of this world, and by cleaving to thy Cross, surmount all obstacles. Who livest and reginest.

LESSON Prov. 31.10-31.

Who shall find a valiant woman? far, and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her. The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils. She will render him good, and not evil all the days of her life. She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands. She is like the merchant's ship, she bringeth her bread from afar. And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens. She hath considered a field, and bought it: with the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard. She hath girded her loins with strength, and hath strengthened her arm. She hath tasted, and seen that her traffic is good: her lamp shall not be put out in the night. She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle. She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor. She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow: for all her domestics are clothed with double gar-ments. She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry: fine linen, and purple, is her covering. Her husband is honourable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land. She made fine linen, and sold it, and delivered a girdle to the Chanaanite. Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day. She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue. She hath looked well on the paths of her house, and hath not eaten her bread idle. Her children rose up, and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her. Many daughters have gathered together riches: thou hast surpassed them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.

GRADUAL Ps. 44.3,5.

Grace is poured abroad in thy lips: therefore hath God blessed thee forever. Because of truth and meekness, and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.

Alleluia, alleluia . V. Ps. 44.5. With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, proceed prosperously and reign. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (13.44-52)

At that time, Jesus spoke to his disciples this parable: The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls. Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it. Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes. Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes. He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.

OFFERTORY Ps. 44.3.

Grace is poured abroad in thy lips: therefore hath God blessed thee for ever.

LESSON II Cor. 10.17-18; 11.1-2.

Brethren: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commendeth himself is approved: but he, whom God commendeth. Would to God you could bear with some little of my folly! But do bear with me. For I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God. For I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

With thy comelieness and thy beauty set out, proceed pros-perously and reign. Because of truth and meekness and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. After her shall virgins be brought to the King: her neighbors shall be brought to thee with gladness. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (25.1-13)

At that time: Jesus said this parable unto his disciples: Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride. And five of them were foolish and five wise. But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them. But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps. And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh. Go ye forth to meet him. Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell and buy for yourselves. Now whilst they went to buy the bridegroom came: and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage. And the door was shut. But at last came also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not. Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.

EPISTLE I Peter 5.1-4, 10-11.

Dearly Beloved: The ancients that are among you, I beseech who am myself also an ancient and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre's sake but voluntarily: Neither as lording it over the clergy but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart. And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you and confirm you and establish you. To him be glory and empire, for ever and ever. Amen.

At that time, Jesus came into the quarters of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is? But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answering said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
