O God, who didst cause blessed John, when burning with love of thee, to walk unscathed through flames, and who by him didst enrich thy Church with a new religious order : grant through the help of his merits, that our vices may be healed by the fire of thy love, and that we may receive remedies unto eternal life.

EPISTLE Ecclus. 31.8-11
Beloved of God and men, whose memory is in benediction. He made him like the saints in glory, and magnified him in the fear of his enemies, and with his words he made prodigies to cease. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him commandments in the sight of his people, and showed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faith and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh. For he heard him and his voice, and brought him into a cloud. And he gave him commandments before his face, and a law of life and instruction.
GRADUAL Ps. 91.13-14.
Lord, thou has prevented him with blessings of sweetness; thou hast set on his head a crown of precious stones. V. He asked life of thee, and thou hast given him length of days for ever and ever.
TRACT Ps. 111.1-3.
Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he shall delight exceedingly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the righteous shall be blessed. Glory and wealth shall be in his house: and his justice remaineth forever and ever.
+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 22.34-36
At that time the Pharisees came to Jesus, and one of them, a doctor of the law, asked him, tempting him : Master, which is the great commandment of the law? Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this : Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets. And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying : What think you of Christ ; whose Son is he? They say to him : David's. He saith to them: How then doth David, in spirit, call him Lord; saying: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit on my right hand until I make thy enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his Son? And no man was able to answer him a word; neither durst any man, from that day forth, ask him any more questions.
OFFERTORY Ps. 88.25.
Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, O Lord, and hast not withholden from him the will of his lips: thou hast set on his head a crown of precious stones.

PROPER LAST GOSPEL
+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Mark 6.47-56
At that time, when even was come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them: but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was an apparition, and cried out: for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And he went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves; for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened. And when they had crossed over, they came to the land unto Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. And when they were come out of the boat, straightway the people knew him, and ran round about that whole region, and began to carry about on their beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And wheresoever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
