And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall re-ceive a never fading crown of glory. Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. 29 December 2014 - Saint Thomas, Bishop and Martyr (Christmas Octave)

Double – Red

Saint Thomas a Becket, otherwise known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, was Archbishop of Canterbury in England in the late 12th century. A staunch proponent of the primacy of the Church, he ran afoul of the government of King Henry II of England. He did not hesitate to excommunicate as needed. Agents acting on behalf of the King (whether or not with his knowledge is still a matter of mystery) assassinated Saint Thomas in 1170 while he was at Vespers.

INTROIT

LET us all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating a festal day in honor of blessed Thomas the Martyr: at whose martyrdom the Angels rejoice, and praise the Son of God. Ps. 32.1. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just: praise becometh the upright. V.: Glory be.

EPISTLE Heb. 5.1-6

BRETHREN: For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins: who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err: because he himself also is compassed with infirmity. And therefore he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. Neither doth any man take the honor to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was. So Christ also did not glorify himself, that he might be made a high priest: but he that said unto him: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place: Thou art a priest for ever, accord-ing to the order of Melchisedech.

GRADUAL Eccl. 44.16.

Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God. V.: Eccl. 44. 20. There was not found the like to him, who kept the law of the Most High.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: John 10.14.

I am the good Shepherd: and I know my sheep, and mine know me. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (10.11-16)

AT that time: Jesus said to the Pharisees: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep. But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf com-ing, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth: and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep: And the hireling flieth, because he is a hireling: and he hath no care for the sheep. I am the good shep-herd; and I know mine, and mine know me. As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep. And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.

LESSON Apoc. 14.1-5.

IN those days I beheld a Lamb stood upon Mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty-four thousand, having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the noise of many waters and as the voice of great thunder: and the voice which I heard was as the voice of harpers, harping on their harps. And they sung as it were a new canticle before the throne, and be-fore the four living creatures and the ancients: and no man could say the canticle, but those hun-dred forty-four thousand who were purchased from the earth. These are they who were not de-filed with women: for they are virgins. These follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were purchased from among men, the firstfruits to God and to the Lamb: and in their mouth there was found no lie: for they are without spot before the throne of God.

Then Herod, perceiveing that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry, and sending killed all the men children that were in Bethlehem and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. 26 December 2014 - Saint Stephen the Deacon and Protomartyr

Double of the II Class with Simple Octave – Red

Saint Stephen was among the first Deacons appointed by the Apostles, as attested in the Book of Acts, and is often considered to be the first such Deacon appointed. Though his teachings were challenged by the Jewish authorities, he always won in debate. Thus he was brought before the Sanhedrin and again challenged. He rebuked them, and so they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. Thus his symbols of martyrdom are three stones and a palm leaf. The three stones, sitting underneath an ombrellino, are featured within the Patriarchal coat of arms of the See of St. Stephen, of whom he is the celestial Patron.

INTROIT Ps. 118. 23, 86

PRINCES sat, and spoke against me: and the wicked persecuted me: help me, O Lord my God, for thy servant was employed in thy justifications. Ps. 118. 1. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

GRANT us, we beseech thee, O Lord, so to imitate what we revere, that we may learn to love even our enemies: for we celebrate the heavenly birthday of him who knew how to pray for his very persecutors to our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth.

COMMEMORATION:
Of the Octave of the Nativity

GRANT, we beseech thee, almighty God, that the new birth of thine only-begotten Son in the flesh may set us free, who are held by the old bondage un-der the yoke of sin. Through the same.

LESSON Acts 6. 8-10; 7. 54-59

IN those days Stephen, full of grace and fortitude did great wonders and signs among the people. Now there arose some, of that which is called the syna-gogue of the Libertines and of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandri-ans and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen; and they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke. Now, hearing these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed with their teeth at him. But Stephen being full of the Holy Ghost, looking up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God. And they crying out with a loud voice stopped their ears, and with one accord ran violently upon him. And casting him forth without the city, they stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, invoking and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And falling on his knees he cried with a loud voice, saying: Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord.

GRADUAL Ps. 118. 23, 86, 117

Princes sat, and spoke against me: and the wicked persecuted me. V. Help me, O Lord my God: save me for thy mercy's sake.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Acts 7.56.

I see the heavens opened, and Je-sus standing on the right hand of the power of God. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (23. 34-39)

AT that time Jesus said to the Scribes and Pharisees: Behold I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes, and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: that upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldst not? Behold your house shall be left to you desolate. For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth, till you say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

¶ The Creed is said throughout the Oc-tave of the Nativity.

EPISTLE Titus 2. 11-15

Dearly beloved, the grace of God our Savior hath appeared to all men, instructing us, that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live soberly and justly and godly in this world, looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ: Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and might cleanse to himself a people acceptable, a pursuer of good works. These things speak and exhort: in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 2. 7. The Lord hath said unto me: thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Alleluia

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (2. 1-14)

At that time there went out a decree from Caesar Au-gustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child. And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger: because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds watching and keeping the night watches over their flock. And behold an Angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them, and they feared with a great fear. And the Angel said to them: Fear not; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: for this day is born to you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. And this shall be a sign unto you: you shall find the Infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger. And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.

The Creed is said during the entire Octave of the Nativity.

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world: Who being the brightness of his glory and the figure of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right hand of the Majesty on high: being made so much better than the angels as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels hath he said at any time: Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee? And again: I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith: he that maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But to the Son: thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And: thou in the beginning, O Lord, didst found the earth: and the works of thine hands are the heavens. They shall perish, but thou shalt continue: and they shall all grow old as a garment: and as a vesture shalt thou change them and they shall be changed: but thou art the selfsame, and thy years shall not fail.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. A sanctified day hath shone upon us: come ye Gentiles and adore the Lord: for this day a great light hath descended upon the earth. Alleluia.

+ The Beginning of the Holy Gospel according to John (1.1-14.)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was in God's presence, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was made nothing that was made: in him was life, and the life was the Light of men; and the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he was to testify concerning the Light. That was the true Light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him to them he gave power to become sons of God, to them that believe in his Name, who are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.(All kneel.) And the Word was made flesh, (All rise.) and dwelt among us: and we saw his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Creed is said.

+ LAST GOSPEL Matt. 2. 1-12.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Juda in the days of king Herod, behold there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him. And king Herod hearing this was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ should be born. But they said to him: In Bethlehem of Juda. For so it is written by the Prophet. And thou Bethlehem, the land of Juda, are not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come forth the Captain that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, privately calling the wise men, learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them: and sending them into Bethlehem, said: Go and diligently inquire after the Child, and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I also may come and adore him. Who having heard the king went their way. And behold the star, which they had seen in the East, went before them until it came and stood over where the Child was. And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And entering into the house, they found the Child with Mary his Mother, (Here genuflect.) and falling down they adored him. (Here rise.) And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back another way into their country.

EPISTLE I Cor. 4.1-5

Brethren: Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and the dispensers of the mysteries of God. Here now it is required among the dispensers that a man be found faithful. But to me it is a very small thing to be judged by you or by man's day. But neither do I judge my own self. For I am not conscious to myself of anything. Yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. Therefore, judge not before the time: until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts. And then shall every man have praise from God.

And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins. At that time: Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said: Peace be to you. Then he saith to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing. Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God. Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed.

The Creed is said.

GRADUAL Ps. 144.18, 21

The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. V. My lips shall speak the praise of the Lord; let all men bless his holy Name. Alleluia, alleluia. V. Come, O Lord; do not delay. Forgive the sins of Israel, thy people. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (3.1-6)

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea and the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilina: Under the high priests Annas and Caiphas: the word of the Lord was made unto John, the son of Zachary, in the desert. And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins. As it was written in the book of the sayings of Isaias the prophet: A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be brought low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways plain. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

SECOND LESSON Isa. 35. 1, 7

Thus saith the Lord: The land that was desolate and impassable shall be glad, and the wilderness shall rejoice and shall flourish like the lily. It shall bud forth and blossom, and shall rejoice with joy and praise: the glory of Libanius is given to it: the beauty of Carmel, and Saron, they shall see the glory of the Lord and the beauty of our God. Strengthen ye the feeble hands, and confirm the weak knees. Say to the faint hearted: Take courage, and fear not. Behold your God will bring the revenge of recompense: God himself will come and will save you. Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall be free: for waters are broken out in the desert, and streams in the wilderness. And that which was dry land shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: saith the Lord almighty.

FOURTH LESSON Isa. 45. 1-8

Thus saith the Lord to mine anointed Cyrus: whose right hand I have taken hold of, to subdue nations before his face, and to turn the backs of kings, and to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut. I will go before thee: and will humble the great ones of the earth: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and will burst the bars of iron. And I will give thee hidden treasures and the concealed riches of secret places: that thou mayest know that I am the Lord who call thee by thy name, the God of Israel. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have made a likeness of thee, and thou hast not known me. I am the Lord, and there is none else: there is no God besides me: I girded thee, and thou hast not known me: that they may know who are from the rising of the sun, and they who are from the west, that there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is none else: I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create evil: I, the Lord, that do all these things. Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened and bud forth a Savior: and let justice spring up together: I the Lord have created him.

GRADUAL Ps. 79. 3, 2

FIFTH LESSON Dan. 3. 47-51

In those days the Angel of the Lord went down with Azarias and his companions into the furnace: and he drove the flame of the fire out of the furnace, and made the midst of the furnace like the blowing of a wind bringing dew. And the flame mounted up above the furnace nine and forty cubits: and it broke forth, and burnt such of the Chaldeans as it found near the furnace, the king's servants that heated it. And the fire touched them not at all, nor troubled them nor did them any harm. Then these three as with one mouth praised and glorified and blessed God in the furnace, saying:

¶ The usual response, Deo gratias or Thanks be to God, is not said at the end of the Fifth Lesson, but rather the Hymn below is begun immediately.

HYMN Daniel 3. 52-56

Blessed art thou, O Lord, the God of our fathers: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. And blessed is the name of thy glory, which is holy: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Blessed art thou in the holy temple of thy glory: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Blessed art thou on the holy throne of thy kingdom: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Blessed art thou upon the sceptre of thy divinity: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Blessed art thou that sittest upon the Cherubims, beholding the depths: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Blessed art thou that walkest upon the wings of the wind, and on the waves of the sea: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Let all thy Angels and Saints bless thee: and praise thee and glorify thee for ever. Let the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the things that are in them, bless thee: and praise thee and glorify thee for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, who is worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. And worthy to be praised and glorified for ever. Blessed art thou, O Lord, the God of our fathers: and worthy to be praised and glorified for ever.

EPISTLE II Thess. 2.1-8

Brethren, we beseech you, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and of our gathering together unto him: That you be not easily moved from your sense nor be terrified, neither by spirit nor by word nor by epistle, as sent from us, as if the day of the Lord were at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for unless there come a revolt first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition Who opposeth and is lifted up above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself as if he were God. Remember you not that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now you know what withholdeth, that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity already worketh: only that he who now holdeth do hold, until he be taken out of the way. And then that wicked one shall be revealed: whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.
