31 May 2014 - (Supplement) May Crowning Ritual

OR CROWNING IMAGES OF OUR LORD OR OUR LADY AT ANY TIME

After the sermon, the Celebrant goes to the crown (crowns) with which the image (images) of (Christ and) Mary is (are) to be crowned. The Celebrant rises (if a bishop, he puts aside the mitre), and, while standing in front of the altar (if a bishop, then at the chair), says or sings the following prayer. If images of both Christ and Mary are to be crowned, he includes in the prayer the words (printed in brackets) referring to an image of Christ.

BLESSING OF THE CROWN

V: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R: Who hath made the heaven and earth.

V: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, by whom all unclean things are made clean, and in whom all things made clean retain their lustre, we humbly implore thy sovereign power that these vessels and ornaments offered unto thee by thy servants may be freed from contamination of every unclean spirit, and that by thy blessing they remain hallowed for the use and service of the holy altar and of thy Church; through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen.

BLESSING OF THE STATUE OR IMAGE

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who hath made the heaven and earth.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

BLESSED art thou, O Lord, God of heaven and earth, for in thy mercy and justice thou didst cast down the mighty and exalt the lowly. Thy marvelous wisdom is shown above all in the Word made flesh and in his Virgin Mother. For he, thy only-begotten Son, who did freely humble himself even unto death on the cross, now sits at thy right hand and is radiant with unending glory, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords; and she, the Virgin who wished to be called thy hand-maid, was singled out to be Mother of the Redeemer and true Mother of all the living: now she is exalted above the choirs of angels and reigns in glory with her Son, interceding for all of us, the Queen of mercy, pleading for grace.

MERCIFUL Lord, look upon us, thy servants, who by crowning this image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, (or: Who by crowning this image of Jesus Christ our Lord and his Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary) proclaim him as King of all creation and approach her as our queen.

GRANT unto us the grace to follow them in serving thee; to do what love demands for the sake of our brothers and sisters; to be lowly on earth, so as to be exalted in heaven where thou dost reward thy faithful servants with a crown of eternal life. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, ever one God. World without end.

R. Amen.

CROWNING

After the prayer, the Celebrant sprinkles the crown (crowns) with holy water and in silence places the crown on the image of Mary. (Or, if the B.V.M. is depicted with the infant Jesus, the image of the Child is crowned, then the image of the B.V.M.)

After the crown (crowns) has (have) been placed on the image (images), the following antiphon or another suitable hymn or psalm is sung. During the singing, the Celebrant incenses the image (images) in the usual manner and then returns to the sedilia (or throne or faldstool for a Bishop).

Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, most worthy Queen of the world, pray for our peace and salvation, for thou art the Mother of Christ, the Lord and Savior of all. (In Paschaltide: Alleluia)

POST-MASS HYMNS

After the Mass one of the following, or another suitable hymn in honor of of the B.V.M. is sung by the choir and/or congregation.

Hail Holy Queen(Salve Regina) & Hail, Holy Queen (Ave, Regina caelorum)
During Paschaltide
Queen of Heaven (Regina Caeli)

Brethren: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commendeth himself is approved: but he, whom God commendeth. Would to God you could bear with some little of my folly! But do bear with me. For I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God. For I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 44.15,16. After her shall virgins be brought to the King: her neighbors shall be brought to thee with gladness. Alleluia. V. Ps.44.5. With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, proceed prosperously and reign. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (25.1-13)

At that time: Jesus said this parable unto his disciples: Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride. And five of them were foolish and five wise. But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them. But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps. And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh. Go ye forth to meet him. Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell and buy for yourselves. Now whilst they went to buy the bridegroom came: and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage. And the door was shut. But at last came also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not. Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.

And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most High. EPISTLE Acts 1. 1-11

The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach, until the day on which, giving commandments by the Holy Ghost to the Apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up: to whom also he showed himself alive after his Passion by many proofs, for forty days appearing to them and speaking of the Kingdom of God. And eating together with them, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth; for John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. They therefore who were come together asked him, saying: Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel? But he said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments which the Father hath put in his own power: but you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they were beholding him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments, who also said: Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come as you have seen him going into heaven.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Ps. 46. 6. God is ascended with a shout, and the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Alleluia. V.: Ps. 67.18. The Lord is in Sinai, in the holy place; ascending on high he hath led captivity captive.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Mark (16.14-20)

At that time Jesus appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my Name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken unto them, was taken up into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God. But they going forth preached everywhere, the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

The Creed is said.

¶ After the Gospel of the principal mass on this day, the Paschal candle, a symbol of the risen Christ, is extinguished. It is not lighted again, except for the blessing of the baptismal font, on the Vigil of Pentecost.

EPISTLE Eph. 4. 7-13

Brethren, To every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the giving of Christ. Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive; he gave gifts to men. Now, that he ascended, what is it, but because he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some Apostles, and some Prophets, and other some Evangelists, and other some Pastors and Doctors, for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ; until we all meet into the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Christ is risen, and hath shone upon us, whom he redeemed with his blood. Alleluia. V.: John. 16.28. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world and go back to the Father. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John 17.1-11

At that time, Jesus lifting up his eyes to heaven said: Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee, as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he may give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do; and now glorify thou me, O Father, with thyself, with the glory which I had, before the world was, with thee. I have manifested thy Name to the men whom thou hast given me out of the world. Thine they were, and to me thou givest them, and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things which thou hast given me are from thee: because the words which thou gavest me, I have given to them: and they have received them, and have known in very deed that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them; I pray not for the world, but for them whom thou hast given me; because they are thine: and all my things are thine, and thine are mine: and I am glorified in them. And now I am not in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee.

OFFERTORY Ps. 65. 8, 9, 20

O bless the Lord our God, ye peoples, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: Who hath set my soul to live, and hath not suffered my feet to be moved. Blessed be the Lord, who hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me, alleluia.

SECRET

EPISTLE II Tim. 4.1-8.

Dearly beloved, I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Ecclus. 45.9. The Lord loved him and adorned him: He clothed him with a robe of glory. Alleluia. V. Os. 14.6. The just man shall spring as the lily: and shall flourish for ever before the Lord. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (5.13-19)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

EPISTLE Wis. 7.7-14

Wherefore I wished, and understanding was given me: and I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came upon me: And I preferred her before kingdoms and thrones, and esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her. Neither did I compare unto her any precious stone: for all gold, in comparison of her, is as a little sand; and silver, in respect to her, shall be counted as clay. I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light: for her light cannot be put out. Now all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable riches through her hands, And I rejoiced in all these: for this wisdom went before me, and I knew not that she was the mother of them all. Which I have learned without guile, and communicate without envy, and her riches I hide not. For she is an infinite treasure to men: which they that use, become the friends of God, being commended for the gifts of discipline.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Lam. 1.13. From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and hath chastised me. Alleluia. V. Ps. 38.4. My heart was hot within me : and while I was thus musing the fire kindled. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (12.35-40)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, Let your loins be girt and lamps burning in your hands. And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you that he will gird himself and make them sit down to meat and passing will minister unto them. And if he shall come in the second watch or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants. But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not the Son of man will come.

EPISTLE James 1. 17-21

Dearly beloved, Every best gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration. For of his own will hath he begotten us by the word of truth, that we might be some beginning of his creature. You know, my dearest brethren. And let every man be swift to hear but slow to speak and slow to anger. For the anger of man worketh not the justice of God. Wherefore, casting away all uncleanness and abundance of naughtiness, with meekness receive the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Ps. 117. 16. The right hand of the Lord hath wrought strength, the right hand of the Lord hath exalted me. Alleluia. V.: Rom. 6.9. Christ, rising from the dead, dieth now no more: death shall no more have dominion over him. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (16. 5-14)

At that time Jesus said to his disciples: I go to him that sent me: and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou? But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go: for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you: but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of justice and of judgment. Of sin, because they believed not in me: and of justice, because I go to the Father, and you shall see me no longer: and of judgment, because the prince of this world is already judged. I have yet many things to say to you; but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself: but what things soever he shall hear he shall speak, and the things that are to come, he shall show you. And Jesus answering said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

THOU has protected me, O God, from the assembly of the malignant, alleluia: from the multitude of the workers of iniquity, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 63.2. Hear, O God, my prayer, when I make supplication to thee: deliver my soul from the fear of the enemy. V. Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, who makest the faithful to be of one mind and will: grant to thy people to love that which thou dost command and to desire that which thou dost promise, that amid the changes of the world, our hearts may there be fixed where true joys are to be found. Through.

LESSON Wis. 5.1-5.

Then shall the just stand with great constancy against those that have afflicted them, and taken away their labours. These seeing it, shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the suddenness of their unexpected salvation, Saying within themselves, repenting, and groaning for anguish of spirit: These are they, whom we had sometime in derision, and for a parable of reproach. We fools esteemed their life madness, and their end without honour. Behold, how they are numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the saints.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 88.6. The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the Church of the Saints. Alleluia. Ps. 20.4. Thou hast set on his head, O Lord, a crown of precious stones. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John (15.1-7)

At that time: Jesus did say unto his disciples: I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean, by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will: and it shall be done unto you.

17 May 2014 - Saint Paschal Baylon, Confessor

Double - White

INTROIT Ps. 36.30-31.

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom and his tongue shall speak judgement: the law of his God is in his heart. Alleluia. Ps. 36.1. Be not emulous of evildoers: nor envy them that work iniquity. V.: Glory be.

COLLECT

O God, who didst adorn blessed Paschal, thy Confessor, with a wonderful love for the Sacred Mysteries of thy Body and Blood, mercifully grant that we, too, may be worthy to feel the same unction of the spirit which he received from this divine banquet. Who livest and reignest.

LESSON Ecclus. 31.8-11.

Blessed is the man that is found without blemish, and that hath not gone after gold, nor put his trust in money nor in treasures. Who is he, and we will praise him? For he hath done wonderful things in his life. Who hath been tried thereby, and made perfect, he shall have glory everlasting: he that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed: and could do evil things, and hath not done them: therefore are his goods established in the Lord, and all the Church of the Saints shall declare his alms.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: James 1.12. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he hath been proved, he shall receive the crown of life. Alleluia. V.: Ecclus. 45.9. The Lord loved him and adorned him: He clothed him with a robe of glory. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke (12.35-40)

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands. And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of Man will come.

OFFERTORY Ps. 88.25.

My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my Name shall his horn be exalted. Alleluia.

16 May 2014 - Saint Ubald, Bishop and Confessor

Semi-double - White

INTROIT Ecclus. 45.30.

The Lord made to him a covenant of peace, and made him a prince: that the dignity of the priesthood should be to him forever. Ps. 131.1. O Lord, remember David: and all his meekness. V.: Glory be.

COLLECT

Be pleased to bestow upon us thine assistance, we beseech thee, O Lord, and, by the intercession of blessed Ubald, thy Confessor and Bishop, stretch forth over the right hand of thy mercy against all the craft of the devil. Through the same.

LESSON Ecclus. 44.16-27; 45.3-20.

Henoch pleased God, and was translated into para-dise, that he may give repentance to the nations. Noe was found perfect, just, and in the time of wrath he was made a recon-ciliation. Therefore was there a remnant left to the earth, when the flood came. The covenants of the world were made with him, that all flesh should no more be destroyed with the flood. Abra-ham was the great father of a multitude of nations, and there was not found the like to him in glory, who kept the law of the most High, and was in covenant with him. In his flesh he established the covenant, and in temptation he was found faithful. Therefore by an oath he gave him glory in his posterity, that he should increase as the dust of the earth, And that he would exalt his seed as the stars, and they should inherit from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. And he did in like manner with Isaac for the sake of Abraham his father. The Lord gave him the blessing of all nations, and confirmed his cove-nant upon the head of Jacob. He acknowledged him in his blessings, and gave him an inheritance, and divided him his portion in twelve tribes. And he preserved for him men of mercy, that found grace in the eyes of all flesh. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him commandments in the sight of his people, and shewed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faith, and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh. For he heard him, and his voice, and brought him into a cloud. And he gave him commandments before his face, and a law of life and instruction, that he might teach Jacob his covenant, and Israel his judg-ments. He exalted Aaron his brother, and like to himself of the tribe of Levi: He made an everlasting covenant with him, and gave him the priesthood of the nation, and made him blessed in glory, And he girded him about with a glorious girdle, and clothed him with a robe of glory, and crowned him with majestic attire. He put upon him a garment to the feet, and breeches, and an ephod, and he compassed him with many little bells of gold all round about, That as he went there might be a sound, and a noise made that might be heard in the temple, for a memorial to the children of his people. He gave him a holy robe of gold, and blue, and purple, a woven work of a wise man, endued with judgment and truth: Of twisted scarlet the work of an artist, with precious stones cut and set in gold, and graven by the work of a lapidary for a memorial, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. And a crown of gold upon his mitre wherein was engraved Holiness, an ornament of honour: a work of power, and delightful to the eyes for its beauty. Before him there were none so beautiful, even from the beginning. No stranger was ever clothed with them, but only his children alone, and his grandchildren for ever. His sacrifices were consumed with fire every day. Moses filled his hands and anointed him with holy oil. This was made to him for an everlasting testament, and to his seed as the days of heaven, to execute the office of the priesthood, and to have praise, and to glorify his people in his name. He chose him out of all men living, to offer sacrifice to God, incense, and a good savour, for a memorial to make reconciliation for his people.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 109.4. Thou art a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia. V. This is the priest whom the Lord hath crowned. Alleluia.

+ The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (25.14-23)

At that time: Jesus said this parable unto his disciples: For even as a man going into a far country called his servants and delivered to them his goods; And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey. And he that had received the five talents went his way and traded with the same and gained other five. And in like manner he that had received the two gained other two. But he that had received the one, going his way, digged into the earth and hid his lord's money. But after a long time the lord of those servants came and reckoned with them. And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents. Behold I have gained other five over and above. His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me. Behold I have gained other two. His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
